In the last year there has been increased debate about whether safe standing areas should be allowed in English football grounds. Middlesbrough Supporters Forum is conducting a survey to assess the thoughts and views of Boro supporters about safe standing at games involving our team. Would you prefer to stand or sit at Boro games?

Middlesbrough Supporters Forum is an independent representative forum of Boro supporters formed in 2017, with representatives of Red Faction, Twelfth Man, Official Supporters Club, Red Army TV, Middlesbrough Supporters South, Equality and Diversity Groups and this forum and fanzine.

The Premier League are now investigating the range of issues around the topic while the Football League has gone a step further and been successful in a request to the government’s own safety body, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority, to allow Celtic-style rail seats at a number of grounds. While the stadia involved are not all seater, there is a definite shift in attitudes of authorities about a possible return to safe standing.

In November 2016 the Premier League agreed to investigate the full range of issues around the topic before reporting back to its member clubs. The Premier League said:- “The clubs have tasked the Premier League with scoping out the safety, supporter, technical and legislative issues surrounding safe standing before any further discussions, based on the facts, can take place.”

Travelling Boro fans will know that standing in front of seats is now the default for any away match and has been for at least the last four or five years, yet this is not something we would do at home games at the Riverside.

Over the past season supporters have been polled at many clubs across the divisions, and the authorities welcome the data to better understand the prevailing mood.

Chris Joseph, Founder of the Middlesbrough Supporters Forum said:- “We would like to ask Boro supporters for their views on safe standing at football matches. There will never be a return to old style terracing, and safe standing areas will not necessarily mean cheaper match tickets. Also, this would have to go through Parliament and become law before it could be implemented by football clubs. We would like to gauge the mood of our own supporters. We hope all Boro fans will take a couple of minutes to complete our simple user-friendly survey. The survey is available across many online media platforms including our own new website at and will be live for one month from Wednesday 14th June 2017. The results will be reported to Middlesbrough FC and the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) and of course the fans. Whether you would prefer to stand or sit we want everyone to participate so we can get an accurate result.”
