Half Man Half Biscuit play Stockton Arc on Saturday June 8th. Cannot wait.

It’s almost possible to sum up everything that’s great about Half Man Half Biscuit just by listing a few song titles. Joy Division Oven Gloves. Bad Losers On Yahoo Chess. Twenty Four Hour Garage People. All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit. For over 25 years now, Nigel Blackwell’s indomitable four-piece have been the most incisive, acerbic and downright hilarious chroniclers of the minutiae of British life in all its grotty glory.

They’re the band who – at the height of their 1980s indie fame – turned down a breakthrough TV appearance on The Tube to watch their beloved Tranmere Rovers play at home on a Friday night. They’re the band whose downbeat anthem The Bastard Son Of Dean Friedman so charmed the man himself that he’s been known to make guest appearances with them onstage to sing along. They’re the band who provide the missing link between The Wedding Present and Alan Bennett, and have rightly now ascended to full national treasure status.

In fact, that’s exactly what John Peel called them, inbetween broadcasting their twelve now-legendary Peel Sessions on his Radio 1 show. Andy Kershaw called them ‘the most authentic British folk band since The Clash’, and even Eliza Carthy has described Blackwell himself as ‘a genius’. And new album 90 Bisodol (Crimond) proved yet again that no other songwriter on earth casts such a withering eye over the mundanity of modern life. Pick of the new song titles for us? Something’s Rotten In The Back Of Iceland, although Tommy Walsh’s Eco House comes close.

‘Blackwell and company's most consistently brilliant work yet in every aspect, and another start-to-finish showcase of rare genius’ said BBC Music. How else would you describe an album whose pivotal track Descent of the Stiperstones details an encounter with Crossroads actor Lynette McMorrough while attempting to buy a jar of Swarfega!
