Six primary school pupils from Middlesbrough have been hailed among the best young engineers in the country after triumphing in a national competition.

The team from Abingdon Primary School took part in the ‘F1 in Schools’ competition to design and race their very own Formula 1 car.

The challenge saw pupils, aged 10 and 11, design and build a Formula 1 car 1/20th the size of a real F1 car and powered by a CO2 gas canister.

The model car then competed against cars from other schools by speeding down a 20m track.

The Abingdon team of six pupils called themselves Greenray Racing Team and each had their own role including design engineer, resource manager and manufacturing engineer.

The team first triumphed in the regional finals in Newcastle in March against secondary school competition.

They won two trophies – best primary school team and best team identity – and a place in the national finals in Birmingham.

They then walked away from the national finals with the award for Best Engineered Car.

Teacher Keith Smith said: “It was an incredible achievement by the team to win the best engineered car trophy.

This was the first year we have entered the competition and to have come away with one of the national awards is truly amazing.

I cannot praise the team enough.

They have had a lot of setbacks and difficulties but all the way through they kept calm and kept finding ways to overcome problems.

They have shown a great deal of intelligence, creativity and hard work and they deserve the national recognition.”

Throughout this year the team worked every week after school on the project.

To celebrate the win the team held an evening with sponsors and patrons along with the school’s headteacher Andrea Williams and Chair of Govenors Councillor Bob Brady at the school.

The F1 in school challenge sees 12 million pupils from 34 countries take part worldwide.
