I was chatting with Boro skipper, Matthew Bates this week as he relaunched the KICKZ scheme at its new base, Acklam Green centre. Kickz is a football-based project funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund and open to young people, both male and female, aged between 12 and 18. It aims to engage with young people by encouraging positive and healthy activities and also build stronger community and police links.

I stole a few minutes of Matthew Bates time between sparring with the kids in boxing gloves and then outside on the all weather pitches. Photo was taken by Tracy Hyman.

Q: What about Middlesbrough. Great start.

MB: Yes great, but that is what it is though it is a good start. It can all go horribly wrong, that is always in the back of your head as well, as much as we are doing so well you are always thinking lets not get too carried away. Lets not get beyond ourselves; we need to take every game as it comes.

Q: Especially away from home the performances have been phenomenal; it is great for us to watch.

MB: Yes it is. Playing at the minute as well is exactly the same for us as watching. We are going into every game now thinking we can win now. This time last season it was where can we get the next 3 points from. Now  it is when are we going to drop 3 points or when will we drop 2 so it is a good mind frame to be playing games and long may that continue. It is still very early days and we need to keep our feet firmly on the ground and carry on.

Q: So you say it is early doors as yet but good to be part of a winning team?

MB: Yes it is. I would like to be sat here Feb/March talking about the same thing. Even then you can’t be certain but we will have played a lot more games and know how well we are doing. We cannot go on the back of six games in the league. Not get too carried away. I understand the fans are excited and rightly so and so are the players. But even so we need to keep our feet on the ground and take everything as it comes really.
