TADEA Middlesbrough Lions take a break from their National League season this Sunday when they host a special Celebrity Basketball game in aid of Zoe’s Place. The club are hoping to raise a large amount of money to help the children’s charity which does so much for the local community. TADEA Lions owner; James Thomson recognises a lot of similarities in the two organisations “We are both small but dedicated organisations aiming to have a big impact in the local community and we are happy to have Zoe’s Place as our benefactor this year. We know the money will be going to a good cause.”

Ali Brownlee will be leading the celebrity team for his second year after doing so in 2008. Ali has assembled an All Star team to include BBC Radio presenter Lisa McCormick and former Boro and Ireland Goalkeeper Jim Platt. The team also hopes to include former World Champion Speedway racer Gary Havelock who is a star rider for the Redcar Bears. Havvy as he is known up and down the UK is also a Sky TV presenter and was one of the better performers in the 2008 event.

Ali Brownlee is a local legend, most famous for being the voice of the Boro. Over the last two years, Ali has developed his own radio sports show on BBC Radio Tees and among football has promoted other local sports including TADEA Middlesbrough Lions basketball. Ali is also a patron of Zoe’s Place and is hoping for an even bigger turnout than the 450 people that enjoyed the last celebrity game in 2008.

One big threat for the Lions is the news that the celebrity’s will boast current world champion kickboxer Fash Ferdowsian. The Lions were keen to state that basketball was a no-contact sport! Rapper and music producer; Principul will also line up as will sport reporter for the Evening Gazette; Martin Neal. The organisers are keen to add a few more names and these details will be announced as soon as confirmed.

This Sunday will play host to three events in a feast of basketball fun at Eston Sports Academy. You can get involved in one or all ways:

11am-1pm ‘Brilliant Basketball Family Fun’ event - FREE of Charge

4pm TADEA Lions v Cumbria All Stars

Tickets for the celebrity game are only £3 children and £4 adults or you can buy a family ticket for just £12. Match programmes are available for just £1 each. As a special offer you only have to pay for one ticket and gain entry into both games.

Brilliant Basketball Family Fun Event

Thanks to sponsors TADEA and event co-organisers Redcar & Cleveland Family Learning, all families from across the Tees Valley are encouraged to attend a bumper session in which the whole family can have a taste of basketball. Coaches and players from the TADEA Lions will be on hand to deliver various stations so that everyone regardless of age can try their hand at shooting, dribbling, passing and much more. Included in the event will be the TVL Bouncy Castle, competitions and information on how to get involved in sport.

TADEA Lions are hoping to encourage more people into basketball and with the Redcar & Cleveland Family Learning are aiming to direct people who enjoy this event onto a ‘Family’ basketball session which will run every Wednesday from 5-6pm at Gilbrook College. This session will begin 3rd November and is for parents to join in with their children. “The idea is for the whole family to have an opportunity to enjoy some positive activity. There are many benefits as we a healthier lifestyle, deliver strong family values and most important of all have some fun playing basketball.” Added TADEA Lions coach, James Thomson.

Interested families are asked to contact the club on 01642 814221 to register their interest. People are also encouraged to stay for the Celebrity game and Cumbrian game and make a big day of it. The café at Eston Sports Academy will be open and there will be 45mins break between 1pm and the celebrity game.
