It’s summer, Fathers Day is coming up so we thought we’d press you in  the direction of our book Teesside Urban Legends: The Best of the Boro Message Boards.

Chapter Four:

Southgate Is Ignorant of Boro's Traditions

A young manager with ambition, who doesn't have a drinking problem, who motivates his team and speaks intelligently to the Press?

The Boro fans did not know what to make of this
Southgate bloke but one thing was for sure, they didn't like it!

With tongues firmly in cheeks, the posters of FMTTM and started a "Southgate Out!" campaign based on his reluctance to adhere to Boro's grand traditions of playing dull football, losing against minnows, letting over the hill players stick around indefinitely and ignoring Academy talent.

All Gareth's 'failings' were highlighted - from winning games during the Christmas period to showing no interest in the Newcastle job and, even more disconcertingly, not joining the long line of managers who liked a cheeky half (or twenty) with the players on a Friday night. "And has anyone seen him pissed in Yarm? I didn't think so!"

The posters were worried about the players' new ability to play football, asking the age old question - "How the fook can players perform without a Sports Psychologist?"

Up in arms about Southgate's new style of football, fans called for the assistance of their Chairman, "Doesn't he realise that by playing this attacking, entertaining football all he will do is have supporters flocking back. Have a word Gibbo!"

Resistance to change was evident, "A manager who signs players well within the transfer deadline? That's NOT how Boro does things!"

"And what is he doing signing young, hungry players with pace when he should be moving for experienced over thirty-year-olds on long term deals?"

Ah well, looks like the Gate has learned nothing about Boro's traditions...

Review of chapter five coming tomorrow...
