After United’s youngsters provided a victory over Blackburn in the quarter finals, apprehension reigned around Old Trafford as only 2 Premier League teams remained in the Carling Cup. The draw which took place on Saturday means that United are to take on Derby County at home in the first of the semi-final legs.

The semi-final dates confirmed for the month of January will start with a match during the week of the 5th January and the follow up match 2 weeks later during the week of the 19th January. While exact dates are yet to be confirmed the matches will take place on either the Tuesday or Wednesday night.

Derby County Football Club was one o the 12 founding member clubs back in 1884 and while their history is long their trophy case is rather short. They progressed from the quarter finals by beating Stoke with an injury time penalty to sneak through to the semi finals. While Derby County, or the Rams, have had some favourable results in the Carling Cup, their Championship run leaves them in the bottom half of the table currently 16th in the league. In reality this puts them more than 30 places below United who lie third in the Premier Division.

The announcement of the semi finals draw did nothing to help the Rams in the Championship after losing to Crystal Palace with a 2-1 score line at home and their goal was a controversial one at that.

On the other hand Burnley have drawn Tottenham Hotspurs and hope that they can continue their run in the Carling Cup after defeating Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham.

While the competition heats up in the Carling Cup the fixture congestion doesn’t ease for United in their quest for multiple trophies this season.
