Darren Fletcher has often been seen as a useful ‘go-to’ player when United have struggled for players in the midfield. Fletcher who joined United’s youth team and has been with United for just over 8 years after joining in July 2000. Fletcher has not been seen as a great talent by any means, he is more often than not been used as a replacement player when there is no one else to fill the position.

This season though Darren Fletcher has really proved his worth to United by scoring 3 goals in 11 appearances and many of those goals coming in vital matches, and like this last weekend, meant the difference between a loss and a draw for United. While not much has changed in his playing style, Fletcher is a more a good old fashioned hard worker on the field, while he has excellent control of the ball and good vision for openings and chances he has often been shadowed by other united players.

It looked like this season could be one of the last for Fletcher at Old Trafford, with one year left on his contract and struggling for match time; other clubs were very interested in buying the 24 year old midfielder. After a meeting with Ferguson though and a good start to the season for Fletcher he has agreed to a new 4 year deal, keeping him at United till he reaches 28.

As Carrick resumes training after his ankle injury, reports suggest that he is fit enough to take on his former club. Carrick who played for West Ham from 2000-2004 was brought in from Tottenham 2 years ago has showed that not only is vital to the United midfield but that he can score. He has scored 8 goals in United’s last 2 seasons and while he has only started in one game this season he is eager to make a return to the first team squad.

Competition for the midfield positions hoots up, with Carrick, Anderson and Fletcher all competing for the central roles which Ryan Giggs has been filling alongside Fletcher in recent games. After the disappointing draw this past weekend, Ferguson is likely to change things around, the biggest question being will Fletcher now make way for Carrick to return to the midfield and who can Tevez replace up front?
