Poor tactics!

Thanks to sir Danny Whittaker we grabbed a point from the jaws of defeat but very disappointed with Campbell's tactics. I am of the opinion that where possible you should always take the game to the opposition when playing at home, but ok if he was concerned about our defensive record of late play 5 at the back but not persist with that formation when 2:1 down!! We could have won that game today , they offered little in open play and were there for the taking. Such a negative attitude at home will not keep us up imho.

Yes poor indeed we could’ve used the extra man in midfield orr the wing what was Durrell doing inside all the time? Thank heaven for the old guard.

Couldn’t understand sticking with 5 at the back when losing, should’ve brought one of the centre backs off with 20 mins to go (or sooner) and put Whit or Marsh on.

Thought Sol got his tactics right today - we made Stevenage look very very ordinary and we should really have won the game fairly easily if we’d taken our first half chances.
Might prove to be a very important point at the end of the season.

Most fans I spoke to agreed that the selection was all wrong as we had no width other than Pearson storming down the wing putting in crosses from deep and were sadly lacking another MF player which was at the expense of 3 CBs. Cole and Stephens poor nothing much coming down the left as Fitzgerald isn’t a free running fullback.

Where were the 3 CBs when Stevenage equalised with a simple header?

I too was very disappointed with the make up of the team today. We need to win our home games and not having Elliott Durrell out wide right was utterly baffling [:O].

But for the intervention of the legend that is Danny Whitaker (please make sure he starts next week Sol!) we would have lost that game against a distinctly ordinary Stevenage side who were no great shakes when we met them at their place either [rle].

Oh and wtf do we do in training with regards to dead ball situations? Their equaliser (against the run of play) was a consequence of poor marking again from a free kick!!

Kind regards

PB [smi].

I also suggest to SC that Danny Whitaker is well worth more than 10 minutes and Elliot Durrell should play as a winger.

Regarding yesterdays game we had more possession and more scoring opportunities. I don't think his line up was particularly that bad, Durrell is our best finisher and also scored!!, you could see the link up working with Smith who wins loads of balls, flicking it on for Durrell to run onto, that said you also need those wingbacks to be bombing up and down the line to get the ball over as well, a job Pearson appears capable of, not sure about Fitzpatrick( that said I thought Fitz played really well in his defensive rather than offensive roll yesterday).
We were guilty of some really bizarre attempts at finishing off moves in the first half, and of course rather than seeing the half out we gifted Stevenage the ball and in the ensuing break, they get a free kick and score with their first real chance.
2nd half Durrell again has a great shot saved somehow by their keeper, so good was it that Elliott actually spoke to the lad in goals, soon after we give away Stevenage's 2nd goal again sloppy defending.
I think his tactics would have worked better if, two guys I would have in my team had played any sort of a game, Cole and Stephens, both very poor by their standards(typified with Stephens blatantly diving for a penalty when he could have got a shot away) and I think this resulted in a long ball approach to attempt to get back on level terms. In all fairness that pitch isn't good enough to play passing football on, with the ball bobbling every where, certainly nowhere near as good as in previous years, but as I can't keep my lawn in good condition I will reserve judgement on that subject.
Danny Whitaker comes on and rescues a point after Rose who until he had run out of steam was our best midfielder, I don't think you can have both playing at the same time, but I would use them 60/30 minutes each until the end of the season, both still have a lot to offer, I just think you need the energy that Stephens and Cole if on their games can offer.
I think Sol is trying to find something that works and we need to stick with him, given the off field antics I don't think there will be a queue to replace him; those guys he picks have to improve on basics such as defending set pieces/corners and also hitting the target, I am still confident we can get out of this mess and kick on next season in League 2.

Clearly, Stevenage didn't get to be 10th in the league by being a mediocre side, but there were a lot of poor long balls up to Smith yesterday which left him rolling his eyes at the quality of passing, and when we finally scored, it was our THIRD one on one opportunity.

For the umpteenth time this season, we conceded a simple goal from a set piece.

Sol knows the problems, he knows what we need to do, the hard part is actually doing it.

Poor finishing? What with THE Andy Cole taking training on how to score goals? Remember why Mr Hoddle didn't pick him for England? And defenders not picking up players at free kicks? What with Sol Cambell the best defender and now coach in the world taking training? Can this be really happening? I can't believe it. LOL. Chuck it in Sol, and all you fans of MTFC. I know you've followed the team for YEARS. But it's only for the good of your health!!!
