Might end up being wrong process, right result...

Welcome to the club Mark, and if you bring Nellie Howarth with you, that can only be a good thing.

At least we've got someone with League experience, someone who has good contacts in the game and who has probably got some idea of how that all fits into our budget...

Unnecesary process - should have worked harder to retain JA.

If we can't have JA, then Yates appears a better option than Saunders or the Colombian guerrilla leader.

I hope Yates has been told the budget and can work with it.

Yes, in an ideal world SJA would have stayed, but I suspect that the Shrewsbury move allows everyone to make a fresh start, and it's clear that there's probably different extents to which blame can be attached to both parties. And, realistically, the chance to manage in League 1 wouldn't have come along too often for SJA.

However, we are where we are. Onwards and upwards. It will be interesting to see what happens next re: outstanding player contracts and potential new signings. I'm led to believe that some of Yates' Solihull signings were on short-term deals.

From a Cheltenham fan:
"Yatesy is a bit of a Cheltenham legend having been part of our rise from Conference to Division 2 (now League 1). He didn't hurt his stock with us at all as manager.

He forged a fantastic squad in 11/12 and we really should have gone up automatically, but Yates has a bit of a habit of bottling the big games. In both of our playoff seasons under him he made strange decisions at important times, bringing Jeff Goulding into the starting 11 in the Playoff final against Crewe for example.

He doesn't take criticism well (who does?) and when things do look to go against him then he struggles to turn it around. This happened in 13/14 and the club kept him on longer than they should have. His sacking was inevitable the moment Neil Howarth was let go - some managers need a number 2 they can take to every club with them and Howarth is that with Yates.

There were strong rumours of him sleeping with Billy Jones' missus, which apparently caused a lot of friction in the dressing room - I couldn't possibly comment on the validity of these allegations.

Ultimately, Yates is good on a budget, he's got a cracking eye for a player and likes to play decent football. If things go well for him, then he'll be brilliant for Macc. The moment they get a bit choppy though, pull the trigger before they get beyond saving."

I was happy enough to give Yates a chance. Especially as I didn't see many managerial options that filled me with confidence. Had never heard of the two candidates offered the job before Yates. And Keith Curle didnít seem too exciting.

Yates has been far worse than I expected. I am usually very patient with Macc managers. I even gave Simpson longer than most on here. But I donít think Iíve ever seen a Macc team this bad. I donít think Iíve seen a manager at any level make so many desperate half time subs, or chop and change his line up. I donít know why anyone would go into a club that had just won a title and bench all the remaining title-winning players.

Following John Askey would always be a very hard task. Itís not so much the lack of points on the board at this stage that bothers me. Itís the lack of any real sign of improvement from the opening day. The squad seems unbalanced. Yates has no idea of his best team.

I donít think we have anything to lose by sacking him at this point. If we win vs Morecambe, maybe that buys a couple more games. Unfortunately I doubt sacking a manager will solve the longer term problems.

.I was talking to another Macc fan today about this, his reply was that he agreed but look at John Askeys first season as

manager back in the conference.
I did and was amazed to see that his first 9 results were won 0 drawn 3 lost 6 points 3 , very comparable with MY.
Things didn't turn out to badly under John so possibly patience is what is required as things take time to build

What price MY emulating that, I wonder, against FGR, Newport and Notts County?

I have been saying wait until 10 - 12 games have been played before pressing the panic button. That means 4 more games including playing Morecambe and Notts County who are down the bottom with us. In my eyes the hardest job in football is to get someone promoted out of the conference or championship.
Last season SJA achieved this against unbelievable odds for what he had to work with (and was never rewarded for this amazing achievement on the budget he had to work with).
Yates has come in and bought in his own players who are not up for it and clearly arenít used to the way macc have traditionally played football! .
The frustrating thing is he has the majority of a damn good team from last season who know how to play football the real way and can gel together over night! Now you can be stubborn or not but time is going to run out and the unbelievable work from last season is going to be undone overnight!!!
Time to fu*k off Yates and get Whitt in charge, someone who knows what macc is about !!
Oh and just to add ; if our fu*in sh*t owners had given Sir John his promotion bonus last season and heíd still have been here we would probably be sitting top 4 now!!![:(!][:(!]

What's gone wrong for Mark Yates? In his previous managerial jobs in League Two and the National League he achieved a win percentage of almost 40% of games. He can't have suddenly have become a clueless manager overnight.
Is the problem with some of the players who have been signed by the club and how much say did he have about signing some of them?
The disruption caused to the squad by losing key players from last season and integrating a lot of new players all at once seems to be at the core of the issue.
How much are Neil Howarth and Danny Whitaker helping him? Is he listening to them?

I'd say that he wasn't given a decent budget for the necessary recruitment in the summer.I base that on where the new players came from.Either released by League 2 sides or non-league or unestablished League reserves.Think only Smith was wanted by another League side ?
So,he hasn't had the greatest squad to work with, however,it doesn't excuse the constant chopping and changing of formation etc.

I think he was chosen MTY because AA WANTS to see MTFC go down. I still think it will be all linked in to the "new" road from Congleton Road area. (You may mock this but I have a long standing record of predicting wild stupid things that come off eventually). Let's see. If MY is still in place in two weeks time (after the West Ham money come in which could be used to remove him) then MTFC are stuck with him, and good luck with that.

MY said in pre season that the budget was good. Now maybe he was promised more and didn't get it, which wouldn't surprise me at all, but he seemed happy enough he could assemble a competitive squad. MY has also praised the chairman numerous times, which surely wouldnít be the case if heíd not got close to what was agreed.

Top priory this summer was to replace the lost quality from one of the best Macc teams of the past 20 years in Whitehead, Hancox and Pilks, this clearly wasnít done. Instead MY targeted the wrong areas of the squad, prioritising height and strength at the back and up front. Was Smith really needed when we already had Bliss? The extra height at the back has failed to keep one clean sheet so far.
It was clear to see the key area was to get a quality passer/thinker in the centre to complement Whit, but those brought in are not fit to lace Dannyís boots. The only area thatís strengthened is in goal, but all thatís done so far is to keep the score lines down.

The old saying Ďif it isnít broke donít fix ití should have been adhered too, MY ripped it all apart and started again with mind boggling formations, tactics and recruitment. Iím usually patient, willing to give any new manager time, but the lack of progress is alarming. I wasnít at all unhappy with Yates appointment, but for someone with plenty of experience he looks well out of his depth in the EFL.

If AA wanted the club to o down why did he back increasing te strength of the squad last season with the signings of the likes of Blisset and Evans.
Also 4 years ago , he could have let the club go to the wall when Salisbury and Hereford were demoted and we would have been but for his "loan".
If as CF there is an hidden agenda surely he would not have acted as such.

I would guess that AA still sees MTFC as an asset in some future negotiation, and retains hopes of clawing back some more of his previous loans or investments?

Morecambe have 28 listed in their first team squad. Some may well be on loan. Currently, Morecambe have an average home league gate of 1895. Ours is 2324.

Quite frankly, I think MY would still be struggling to pick the line-up if we only had 11!

I would suggest that we might only be paying a %age of the wages for a loan player. It would depend on the deal struck between MTFC and the parent club of the player involved.

It can obviously be in the interests of the loaning club to get their player match fit, give them game time and experience, etc.

It is a really difficult one this. MY's track record before he came to Macc was not that bad and he had won almost 40% of the games that he was in charge of teams in League 2 and the National League. So to say his track record is poor is incorrect. But obviously it is poor with Macc so far.
Is it right to fire a new manager after only 9 games? I would say that it has to get to 12 games before I will join the calls for him to leave. If the owner and CEO are thinking of asking him to go I would think that the view of Danny Whitaker on the matter is pretty critical.

The shoestring has broken. These loans are a cheap option and we have replaced the departed quality and injured with second rate players who have weakened the team immeasurably that's plain to see.

MY can always be relied upon for an enlightening post-disaster quote....

ďIt wasnít the result we were looking for,Ē Mark Yates, the visiting manager, said.

Whether by accident or design, the upper echelons of the hierarchy are slowly destroying our club.

There have been heavy cup defeats to top clubs in the past. Who remembers Sammy's side going down 7-0 at Coventry? However I believe that Yates should be given one more opportunity to play a team of champions on Saturday, including the captain of our championship side. He can do this without losing face, simply by resting some of last night's players.

If he can't win three points then he should go.

Agree, good interview. Knows itís not been enough but I donít doubt that MY wants a win more than anyone tomorrow.

Heís also right that protests (during the game) and boycotts do no good for the players.

I think silkman11 makes a valid point.

Sooner or later Mr Yates will probably manage to scrabble together a couple of decent results, and the preceding disasters will be quickly forgotten.

'The corner has been turned'. 'It's all coming good'. 'Light at the end of the tunnel', etc., etc.

In much the same way as Askey papered over the cracks by winning the National League. Like all involved in football management, Askey and Yatesy are equally clueless and tactically inept.

Askey was the glue that stopped the whole thing falling apart the last few years. If he had decided to stay we would have been at least lower mid table. The board should have pulled out all the stops to keep him. Bet Yates is on a considerably better contract than Sir John ever was.

Do we not feel that Yates throwing in players we request is just last chance saloon by Yatesy to buy himself sometime. It seems some people are allowing it to paper over the cracks. A manager should not need fans to help him pick a starting 11. Joke. He needs to go.

What an utter dick you are RI! Grouping Askey and that clown together. One is the man who using not much more than his skill and judgement put a team together to win the Conference (it will ALWAYS be this to me). The other has us bottom of the league and winless in 10 games.

Well the 12th league game will be upon us on Saturday against improving Notts County. I have been saying for some time that we had to wait until 10 to 12 games had been played to judge whether the panic button should be pressed. At last MY seems to have discovered that the remaining players from last seasons squad have more skill, spirit and fight than his inadequate new signings and we have managed two creditable draws. For me the llnext game, the 12th, is the one to define whether I join the growing group that feel MY should go. A home win would mean 5 points from the last three games - form that if maintained would see us climbing up the league. Lose this match and we are fast approaching a point where escaping relegation would become very difficult without significant expenditure on a new manager and January signings. Another draw would probably leave me sitting on the fence.

It should be a must win game for MY. Anything less than a win v a team at the bottom using the players from last season would show he's useless, which he is, and the players have no confidence in him, which I think they don't.

Interesting though....., JA would never have played Wilson, Marsh and Arthur together. In fact did Arthur only start one game last season, plus heís taken a right slating on here over the past few weeks about not even being NL standard. Also Maykock has taken a right battering and heís looked pretty good recently. The point here is MY sees these players regularly in training and has to make his selections based on that as well as
match performance. I would also hope that DW as assistant manager is not sitting back and is also inputting into the team selection.
