We have apparently now held open trials for an U18 side next season.

Will this just be paying lip service to what is basically an academy/community based amenity, or are any there genuine prospects of the programme ever producing players who will go on to wear the Silkmen shirt?

Hi,

My little brother and a couple of his mates who are local aged 16 attended both stages of the trial.

There were 68 at the initial trial including a number of lads who had travelled up from London. I believe they had said if they were to sign then they'd be expecting their expenses to be covered for travel etc which I doubt the club will accommodate.

The current under 18s academy team ties in with All Hallows School where a number of lads play for them (including my brother). A few of these lads have also played for the Under 21s this year.

Since promotion, the Under 21s have been abolished and the club plans to press on with an under18s squad only. This team has been entered in to the FA Youth Cup also and I believe it is currently being whittled down to 25 players.

I watched the Under 21s last year and in all honesty, a lot of the lads were unfit and not of a good enough standard to make the step up.

However, I would of thought this is why they are now having an under 18s squad as the younger players look pretty good with plenty of room to develop and could therefore have potential to break in to the first team in the future.

As I say, this is what I currently know and a lot of the above is just the assumptions I've made from what's been said.

Hope this sheds a bit of light.

Thanks for responding MS.

Nurturing and developing young players is a worthy aim in itself, but I can't help feeling that, particularly at our level, there needs to be some symbiosis in the arrangement.

There will surely be expense involved with organisation, day to day running, and travelling, so there needs to be, at least potentially, 'something in it for us'.

The reserve team was a waste of time and money in our later years in the league

Better to play behind closed doors friendlies to give people some game time
