Now we all know that the last few seasons have been VERY tough financially but thanks to really prudent management, we now appear to be in a much better fiscal position than we have since our tragic slide out of the Football League and the ill-fated attempts to get back there under a manager who suffice it to say was not one of the most popular of managerial appointments in the proud history of our beloved Silkmen.

Last week, I was contacted by a very reliable source to advise me that initial discussions had been held with a certain Connor Jennings; a very likeable young man who instantly became a cult hero with the Silkmen faithful during his all too brief loan stint with us in the 2013/14 season where he scored an amazing 14 goals in only 16 appearances. My subsequent post brought very favourable comments from a number of regular well informed and sensible posters on Wraggs. Gettoit spoke of how Connor ‘is the most exciting player I've seen in a Macc shirt since Chris Byrne' and bitternloco stated that ‘there can be little doubt that CJ ticks the boxes as to the calibre of player needed if we are to stand a chance of ever getting out of this league.'

The stylish and classy Mr Jennings junior always seemed to score against us whenever we were the opposition, but such is the measure of the respect he earned during his brief stay; the hard-core rarely lambasted him, and he would always receive a very warm round of applause whenever his name was mentioned as part of the opposition line up. Imagine my surprise when I was contacted by a certain Mark Blower; Chairman of Macclesfield Town Football Club who was able to affirm that the Silkmen had some initial contact with Connor although he also made it clear that there are also some interested parties (much bigger fish than us as well) who were sniffing around Connor. However, what is pleasing to note that Connor really enjoyed his time at the Moss Rose and really likes the style of play of a certain ‘Sir' John Askey whilst holding him in the highest regard.

As I am sure the readership can appreciate; to attract players the quality of Connor does not come cheap, and often want the additional security of longer deals such as a two year deal as opposed to a one year deal. Mark had been heartened to read a number of favourable comments on Wraggs and made it clear that the club would love to entice players of the calibre of Connor to the Moss Rose.

Sadly today, one of those much bigger fish (Tranmere Rovers) bared their substantial financial muscle for this level of football, and Connor has subsequently signed a two year deal with them!! After uttering a few swear words under my breath, I took a few deep breaths; shrugged my shoulders and said ‘c'est le vie' before reflecting that when a club like ours starts to look towards attempting to attract quality players such as Connor Jennings, I believe that as fans we have to sit up and take note. I texted Mark to clarify that the meeting planned for next week was now not going ahead, and Mark immediately returned my text and stated that he very much wished to meet with fans to demonstrate the commitment of the club to getting back in to the Football League with an interesting proposition.

Mark comes across to me as an intelligent, articulate and astute sort of a bloke and so I would suggest that this interesting proposition may be well worth listening to. With this in mind, Mark has indicated his willingness to meet with fans and see how we can work together in a spirit of collaboration about how we can move forward and in our collective dream of a welcome return to the promised land of the Football League. The bar will be open and I am sure that the dynamic duo of Helen & Paul Bona might be able to rustle up a bit of food, but I would need to confirm this, and let you know nearer the time.
