On Thursday 3rd September 2015, PB, PBJ & a number of his compatriots met at the most welcoming Pack Horse Bowling Club with the legend that is ‘Sir' John Askey alongside cult hero Bill Gorton; the one and only entrepreneur that is Andy Scott and local radio legend Nick Wright!!

The rationale behind this gathering was to identify ideas and innovations that could potentially raise funds that could significantly support John & Efe's first team budget and make a huge differenc
e to our chances of securing a play-off place or even automatic promotion. Well one can wish can't one!!?

Although small in numbers, the assembled group which included a healthy representation from the board of the Silkmen Supporters Trust (SST) were able to put forward a number of ideas that were noted by the ever efficient Marie Grundy (aka Grimmy) to whom PB offers his sincere gratitude. The ideas that were generated included the following:

- A donation of £10 a month with the possibility of a prize provided by the club such a table for four at a forthcoming game, a boardroom experience etc. It was noted that if only 50 people took up this offer then it would generate £500 a month which could comfortably pay a players wages, and this could make a significant difference to our season, and just think what 100 fans paying a tenner a month could do!!

- Make an approach to local businesses to see if they would be would be willing to make a monthly contribution to the player's fund. It was suggested that if a player's wages were sponsored by an individual /business, then a percentage of any ‘sell on' fees could be forwarded to them.

- Make an approach to local restaurants to see if they would be willing / able to provide discounts / meals / tables in exchange for some publicity from within the club. It was further noted that a bit of ‘leg work' would need to be undertaken to gather the necessary information about any willing participants throughout the town.

- Get fans to donate monthly amount for a time limited period eg November to January that would help to develop a good FA Cup run which then itself generates significant funds.

- The use of bucket collections around the ground that would provide monies for the SOS appeal. It was noted that Stockport County have a particular initiative with static bins (near to turnstiles food kiosks etc.) around Edgeley Park which has helped to raise significant funds. Liaison to be made with SCFC with regards to how they developed this initiative.

- A bag packing initiative from a number of Silkmen fans within local supermarkets. John Askey spoke of how such an initiative utilised by the youth team had raised several thousand pounds a few years ago!!

- Barry (who runs the Pack Horse Bowling Club) spoke of how a ‘Play and Win' machine in the bowling club has been made use of, and raised significant funds for them, and has subsequently provided the contact details. It was noted that whilst this may not specifically aid the SOS appeal it could provide vital funds to the club and details of this will be passed on to Robert Stirling; General Manager at MTFC for his information.

- A ‘Question of Sport' evening that would pit Silkmen legends against current players and then a final against fans that would pay for the privilege!!

- Pool and darts tournaments (either in the Mcllroy suite or Silkmen friendly pubs) that would pit Macc players against fans!!

- A Silkmen ‘anthem' recorded by the excellent Rose Amongst Thorns that could be sold to fans / non-fans and also include monies raised from fans willing to provide the ‘backing vocals' to the anthem that would place them forever within the annals of Silkmen folklore!!

- Make contact with Macc Juniors (previously Macc Boys) to negotiate the possibility of them developing a more coherent affiliation with the Silkmen and adopting their colours which could provide significant revenue, and also invite them to games where the attendance is likely to be less (such as Tuesday night games) to promote their interest / affiliation in and to MTFC.

Look at initiatives such as Crowdfunder which other clubs such as Chester & Grimsby have used to great effect.

- PB then spoke of his delight that as a consequence of his ‘Poole of Silke' article on Wraggs to Riches, that an amazing supporter (who wishes to remain anonymous) had provided a donation of £15000 into the Silkmen Supporters Trust (SST) account for use by John for the first team budget, and the first team budget only . PB then spoke of how this anonymous fan who has clearly reached legendary status had made a further pledge to match (pound for pound) anything could be raised for the SOS appeal to a maximum of £10000!! As a consequence of this the following actions were agreed:

(a) Tony Brown, Andy Scott & Nick Wright to be the working party that will coordinate how best to maximise this opportunity with Tony taking the lead role.

(b) Andy Scott and Nick Wright to coordinate maximum media coverage via the local media and radio.

(c) MTFC to be contacted to advertise the anonymous benefactor's offer via Twitter and Facebook. The concept of a visible barometer of our progress on this aim on the various websites was well received.

(d) Have a highly visible catchphrase that would catch tone's attention such as ‘The 10k dash' to be achieved by the date of our game against our fiercest rivals Altrincham and how good would that be?

(e) The board of the Silkmen Supporters Trust is to meet next Monday (14th September) to agree on how they can provide the necessary banking support that will provide a clear and transparent means of managing the fund raising initiative.

At the end of the end of the meeting PB thanked all present for their fantastic contribution and noted that he sincerely hoped that as a consequence of this evening's meeting that John & Efe would be able to reap the financial rewards that this initiative had been able to facilitate.

PB is Silkmen ‘til he dies!!
