Throughout the summer months, supporters of Macclesfield Town FC have been doing their best to raise much needed funds for our local Vanarama National League side. So far, their efforts have involved everything from injecting cash through a new Silkmen Lottery, to bringing together a team of volunteers to renovate a section of the match day catering facilities.

But now fans, the community and local businesses alike are being asked to go the extra mile by joining in the Silkmen's new ‘10k Dash'.

In August, an overseas benefactor donated £15,000 to the club to help provide crucial cash for recruiting and paying the playing staff.

Now he's offered to inject up to £10,000 more if local support can also raise funds, on a like for like basis, before November 10th, the day of the home fixture against local rivals Altrincham FC.

With Macc Town continuing to operate on a shoestring budget, it's understood an extra £20,000 to spend directly on the team would make a significant difference.

To make it as simple as possible to collect and contribute funds to the '10k Dash', SOS - Support Our Silkmen - has set up a crowd funding account. The Silkmen Supporters' Trust is also backing the scheme and has agreed to oversee proceedings and provide the necessary banking facilities, on the clear understanding that every penny raised will be channeled towards paying for the playing staff.

The organisers are hoping that by making this a newsworthy event through the press, local radio and TV, they can raise the profile of the challenge and help highlight the importance to the club of maintaining a playing staff capable of matching and exceeding the heroics of last season when Macclesfield Town came within a single point of a much deserved promotion play-off place.

It's also hoped that local schools, clubs and businesses will come up with their own mini fund-raising ideas, the proceeds from which might push the ‘10k Dash' well beyond its initial £10,000 target.

Silkmen legend and manager, John Askey, is right behind the scheme. "The £15,000 we received last month helped us secure important new players for the team. If we can now bring in another £20,000 or more, it will give us a much better chance of keeping the squad together and maintaining the consistency that's vital if we're going to secure one of those top spots by the end of the season."
