Good film on iPlayer – shown on Sunday on BBC2 – called The Edge. About England's rise to the top of the rankings a few years ago.
Saw a special screening of it a while back with the chap behind it - quite moving at times, and some great insights into why they're called Test matches...

when I left England in late 1980's LCCC were ne of the top teams, had some f the world's best batmen, Brian Davidson and David Gower and regularly got to cup finals

Sunday afternoons at Grace Rd were packed with regulars, beers, sandwich packed lunches, Sunday newspapers and the crowd singing pro-Leicestershire and anti-Derby & Nottingham songs.

They were truly great days, but last time I looked they were down in 2nd division... very sad to see.

At least we get to see England in test matches on Canadian TV

Spent some great days at grace rd in the 70,s and 80,s, unfortunately like football the teams with all the money have the test match grounds and we will do very well to recover those great days.
Somerset and Essex are doing well, but both are well supported clubs and Somerset especially have a large fan base.
Devon and Cornwall should have a county team because the supporters down here are great followers of sport and they would have no trouble filling a ground.

The Eighties were pretty spartan years for winning anything apart from CC runners-up and B&H Winners it was pretty average. they weren't a bad side, neither a top side either, they played the game well though. Gower was away with England for big chunks of the 80's summers

Aggers was great at county level but not really up to it at test level, 3 England caps, going for plenty and picking up not many wickets, his last was V Richards I think, took 100 wickets one year

Nearly one of the few bowlers to get all 10 wickets in an innings 9-70 v Kent. Had a few balls at Jarvis - renowned bunny. Paddy Clift cleaned him up.

Superb wasn't it.

Loved the bit where Mat Prior hit Ponting (fielding at sily mid off) full in the mouth .He said "Oh God are you okay ?" Pontin got up spat out a mouth full of blood and said "FCUK Off!"

I've adopted his "Soft c*ck, eh" sledge for general day-to-day use ever since I first saw the film... [^]
