I was at their gig in the Assembly rooms in 1977 and from memory, they were meant to lay the de Mont the next night but canceled.
Can any bucker remember why I seem to think it was because it all kicked off in Derby

I have no recollection of any Pistols gigs booked for the Demont in 77. I can remember going to Coventry but we couldn't get in. The infamous 'Anarchy Tour' was in 1976 and most were cancelled, which Assembly rooms were you at?

The 70s
If the 60s provided quality, the 70s undoubtedly gave us quantity. Who could forget the likes of Genesis, with Peter Gabriel, Hawkwind and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown?

Punk arrived in the mid 70s and it didn't pass Derby by. All fired up from their UK tour, one of the last gigs on The Sex Pistols' itinerary was Cleopatra's in Derby.

Amidst a media frenzy the Pistols delighted in creating as much disorder as possible. They inspired the kids and appalled their parents so much that a second gig, planned for December of the same year, was called off after the band played a trick on the local politicians of the time.

Derby councillors were left for two hours at the King's Hall venue on Saturday 4th December. Johnny Rotten and co had promised a preview matinee gig for local dignitaries and the press.

The controversial band had no intention of showing up. The councillors waited in front of a stage, empty but for a lonesome guitar with only its amp for company. Enraged, the councillors stamped their feet and said that the show would not go on.

Citizen's of Boomtown: The Story of the Boomtown Rats.
BBC 2, 9.20pm tonight.
Saw them live at some place in Birmingham that I can't remember the name of. Full bus load of us for Viv Henry's birthday. We were all XXXXXXed wearing blue and white stripey pyjamas and doing the 'pogo'!

Barbarella's, I was there. Geldof went mardy when the pogoists started spitting at the band which was a punk thing. A bit rich considering the Boomtown Rats were riding a bit of punk vibe at the time.

I remember how packed it was in front of the stage and I was stuck somewhere in the middle. I just had to keep doing the pogo until I could crawl out for a rest!
Apparently some of the footage in tonight's programme has a bloke jumping on stage and punching Geldof and he carries on blooded. I can't remember it being quite as bad as that in Barbarella's that night.
I've found a list of their gigs and they did Birmingham Town Hall and Birmingham Odeon as well. And De Mont in Leicester a couple of times too!

Barbarella's was on Cumberland Street and was demolished in 1979. As I remember it there was about 3 separate rooms in there. Cumberland Street is now a pedestrianised walkway as part of the Brindley Place developments.
Another venue nearby was the Rum Runner on Broad Street itself but that was demolished too, sometime in the late 80's, to make way for the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Broad Street back then would be unrecognisable to how it is now. And redevelopment is still taking place now.
Another place we used to use a lot was the Swan at Yardley overlooking the underpass. The building is still there but the pub, nightclub complex that used to be in there is long gone. At the time the downstairs pub bar was the longest one in Europe! Wainfleet's Coaches from Nuneaton would run there on most weekends!

When the Boomtown Rats played Granby Halls in approx' September 1979 it was my first gig with my mates.

One of them fainted in the crush within minutes of them coming on, & had to be carried out over the heads...gig over for him.

A fresh faced 13 year old, I'd only ever seen Darts ( not the sport) at the De Mont with my mum before.

Early 80’s the rats must have played in Leicester as I remember them being on Granby st at lunchtime when they got caught up in the FV (Think it was Chelsea).

Met Geldof in the Holiday Inn by the KP in 2005 and he seemed a decent fella and was happy to talk to us mere mortals.

They weren't ever booked to play demont, we used to know the lot that were playing there and used to go all the time- and as said before the seventies were mega.
We went cov and I remember the locals getting pretty hissed off cause of the amount from Leicester that turned up and had tickets to get in.

It was a tough watch that documentary last night. Geldof as a singer clearly wanted to be the spokesman of his generation. But he wasn’t.

I watched a bit of that Channy and found it interesting.

Mrs Dags and I saw them at the Roundhouse in Camden in 2013 and enjoyed them.
