Or is it because he has been advised that the teaching of children whose parents are key workers - and who might be more likely to be exposed to the virus, has been going on for weeks without any obvious spike in infections ? The Government has done almost everything wrong in its handling of the pandemic, not closing borders, delaying lockdown, chucking infected patients out of hospitals, but the risk now is that it mishandles exiting lockdown and completely wrecks the economy. Professor Gupta has argued today that the lockdown is disproportionately affecting the poor, including already disadvantaged children from poor families. As a Head it would be interesting to hear WestYorksFox take on this, since his authority is one of the awkward squad.

Harwich, you will of course just have read that Starmer's children have been at school since the start of lockdown as Lady Starmer is a key worker.

Hopefully I can provide a bit of useful information from a school leaders view. Been a tough week, definitely easier to close a school than re-open one! I work in Kirklees which is a really diverse local authority with some really deprived areas like Dewsbury, some very affluent rural villages and some places, like the village where I work, that sit between. My school is in an ex pit village with a mixed demographic - some affluence and some deprivation. Today all heads in Kirklees were asked to attend an online seminar to discuss the re-opening of schools and all the related issues this involves. Kirklees have taken a very different stance to some councils and there is no intention to issue a blanket decision to oppose the re-opening of schools - we're are being encouraged to make our own decision as we know our schools better than they do and they have some primary schools with 600 and some with less than 50. They are very frustrated as an authority with the information they get from the UK Government and they are very insistent that the information we get as schools is the right information. The R rate isn't particularly useful as we are lumped in with the Humber and the North East. There have been no cases of covid infection or hospitalisation from any school since they were closed to all but key worker / vulnerable pupils. As a school we were ready to open on 1st June for all pupils in Reception,Y1 and Y6 and there are extensive risk assessments in place to make sure this is done safely. On balance we've decided to wait until June 8th at to take on board the government's assessment of whether it has met the five tests it set out to do. During the closure period I've worked with colleagues who have gone above and beyond and over again to support the school and a tiny minority who I and other staff will find hard to look in the eye again. They simply haven't turned up to support the children at all. About 15% of our children are classed as vulnerable and we've managed to get 10% of them into school - it comes down to parental choice in the end. I'm in no doubt that the longer this goes on, the more the most vulnerable children in society will suffer. We're a safe place and a haven to these children. Teaching unions are there to protect their members and they have given me invaluable support over the years but there is a feeling amongst people who work in school that they are trying to turn this into a political issue to gain a bit of leverage. One thing to finish on - the vast majority of teachers and staff I've worked with over the last 25 years invest far more than time in their pupils than many people would believe, sometimes at the expense of their own emotional welfare - it can be a really harrowing job. We've been doing live assemblies on Facebook each week but nothing beats standing in front of the whole school and I XXXXXX miss that every day.

Thank you WYF for such a considered response. I was interested that Kirklees had taken a measured view, unlike Calderdale who are playing politics. Good luck and stay safe.

For anyone who doesn't read The Eye, MD writes a lot of sense. He has changed his opinion on various issues as the crisis has unfolded, which suggests he avoids dogmatic trench-politics. He has been firmly of the opinion that schools need to re-open for a fortnight at least.
Sone teaching union woman was on the radio this week, and genuinely sounded really disappointed when forced to confirm that there have been zero instances of infection from the key-worker schooling that has continued for however long it is.
But that alone is an interesting issue; key workers will have been amongst the most vulnerable people during the peak, working on the 'front line' whilst they mainly have been living with their kids, who congregate at school before going back home each day to share those spaces with their parents.
But what's to say the kids haven't been infecting the parents, rather than the patients in the hospitals, etc? Presumably because no teachers have been infected...

I was quite surprised when I heard that fact today about the number of cases in the emergency childcare that schools have been providing.

Teachers play political games they always have, so if they feel unsafe let them stay at home .

They can have their holiday pay or unpaid leave, if people don't wish to work then hey they have to accept there is no free money.

Workers in countries that have no welfare are not worried about the flu they are far more concerned about their rent and getting food.

The first world whimps will become the new citizens of the third world if they think ruining their economy is okay.

Thanks WYF for a fascinating insight. It’s disappointing to read that some councils are not ready to go back, shouldn’t they have been making plans to return for the last 9 weeks?

I said earlier that the unions needed to box clever on this and they simply haven’t. They’ve used phrases like lambs to the slaughter, Guinea Pigs, risking our lives etc and they’ve been made to look silly. Unions should look after their members interests and not try to score political points just because it’s a Tory government.

If the tories were so concerned about children from poor backgrounds why have they forced austerity, food banks and poor acommadation on them as well as penalising their parents through the nightmare of universal credit.

Austerity was to payback all of the Labour borrowing. Thankfully the country was in a position to borrow again during this crisis, if we’d have been up to our credit limit borrowing more would have been a lot more expensive.

The Tories didn’t invent poor housing and poor people.

Stop trying to politicise the crisis we’re in just to score childish points
