David Currie for me too. He looked like he should be wearing an ill-fitting dinner jacket, carrying a pint of bitter in one hand and holding a microphone in the other. He scored against us and celebrated in front of the kop. I hated him with peculiar intensity after that.

I always disliked John Moncur. Think his son is now playing in the lower divs mention of his name during the highlights always catches my ear...

No wonder you only remember players from the past occasionally Borebage, there are so many of them you don't have time to remember them more than occasionally.

I know that I saw Matthews play Channy !but he suffered badly from injury The Mercury would always put him in Stokes 11 for the Saturday ,and Leicester always had him in the Programme ,but many times there was a tannoy announcement stating that he had dropped out ,the last time it happened was was the last game of the 1964-65 season

I watched Stanley Matthews play at Filbert Street against us in the FA Cup 3rd Rd in 1962. I was 9 and with my Dad. Matthews was about 3 weeks short of his 47th birthday. He was marked by Richie Norman and the game ended 1-1.
We also went to the replay at the Victoria Ground which Stoke won 5-2 and Matthews scored their first goal.
It was something of a cup shock because Stoke were Division 2 at the time and Leicester were beaten FA Cup finalists the previous season!

I also saw him play at Nuneaton Borough for Port Vale in a friendly a few years later in February 1966. He had just turned 51 a few days earlier. His old pal Jackie Mudie also played and was only a couple of years younger than Stan!

There was a Brian Arblaster who was a goalkeeper at Barnsley for 1968/69. But he was only 26 at the time. Unless he was injured and they had to draft someone else in last minute.
Arblaster later moved to Chesterfield. He died in 2013 aged 69!

David "Bronco" Layne, Peter Swan and Tony Kay until the Sheffield Wednesday "betting scandal" in 1964. Each was jailed for 4 months and given subsequent life bans from all football. Appealed on release to 8 years.
Layne was a prolific centre forward up till then with 120 goals in 195 appearances for Swindon,Bradford City and Wednesday. Tony Kay had been transferred to Everton and won the League Title the following season before the scandal came to light. It also cost him the chance of a place in the England World Cup squad in '66. Only Swan, also an England International, ever returned to football, with Bury and then player/manager with Matlock Town when they won the FA Trophy in 1975.
Ex Swindon player Jimmy Gauld was the central figure in the "match fixing" activities, in all Divisions of the Football League, that led to 33 players being jailed and then banned. The list included Sammy Chapman who years later would become the manager of Wolves!
