What’s everyone doing. My tatties are chitting nicely and despite my recent broken wrist accident the ground is ready to plant.
My local nursery ( a small family run business) will have all the veg plants ready in 10 days. So hopefully frost gone and then plant and fingers crossed.

It’s all a bit hit and hope at the moment, a bit like Jon Sammels taking the free kicks. Anything could happen

Planted my chitted first earlies (Rocket) into the ground today.
Big problem - went to 2 garden centres to buy packets of seeds today and there was almost faack all there.
I was shocked why there had been panic buying of pea seeds!
But I guess if people fear they are going to be banged up at home they want something to do and if there are going to be food shortages then it might be a good idea to grow your own.

I'm ready to plant spuds tomorrow, lots of seeds coming through in the greenhouse, but what happens if we go into lockdown?
Will we be able to carry on ?
Is it classed as essential food production ??

To the uneducated amongst us what’s chitting? Don’t you just buy seed potatoes and bung em in the ground?

Chitting is putting your seed potatoes in egg boxes rose side up in a coolish room (but frost free) like a loft extension with plenty of light but not direct sun.
The spuds will sprout nice green/purple shoots after a few weeks - not the horrid white shoots. When the shoots are about 1 inch tall they are ready to plant in the potato bed.
The chitting process gives the spuds a head start.

Been and raked in some growmore fertiliser ready for planting my earlies at the end of the month. Also gave my over wintered broad beans a feed of blood/fish&bone fertiliser. Now just waiting for the weather to warm up the soil here in deepest Rutland.

Well spotted isimba, but my allotment is deep (in horse sh1t) that I dug in last Autumn, hence my deepest Rutland term, obviously with a bit of poetic license !
Talking of Melton, will shortly be making the move back over the border, at least when things settle down again !

The good news is folks that this morning that nice Mr Gove from the government said that we can use our allotments as our daily exercise.

So at least we can grow our veg ready for some bastid to come and nick it in a few weeks when we no doubt will see looting and civil unrest even in Rutland !

I was told by an old un that you should wait until the soil feels warm on your bare ąrse before planting out. He also said ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out.

Whissy: I am in exile in darkest Oakham but also plan a skip back over the border into Gods Own County at the earliest opportunity. Good luck with the horse sh1t!
