The Valley, Charlton Side Stand

Hampshire mentioned the side stand at the Valley, am l right in thinking it had the biggest capacity of any stand in the UK. Stood on to before it closed, but it was massive. Don't know what it held.

The Holte end and the one at Wolves where large but l think this was bigger.

For some unknown reason this is 1 of my favourite away grounds.
Did a quick bit of research and found this

The 1970's capacity used to be listed as 66,000. The east terrace was said to be able to hold 44,000.

The joys of retirement and having some spare time [;)]

That terrace was massive. That ground once held nearly 75,000 before WW2.
In the early 60s when crowds were very low there that East Terrace was almost empty with rows and rows of terracing covered in weeds.

I went to the Stock Car World championships at Odsall in Bradford late seventiesand that was massive. I believe they had a crowd in excess of 100,000 for a Rugby League match back in the day

The old Valley was so large, it was never filled to capacity. The East and South Stands held at least 64,000 alone.

Charlton and Odsal are both sited in natural 'holes' and therefore are easy to utilise...
Odsal is now vacant, the Bradford Bulls having left so stocks and speedway are being considered as replacements.

Biggest terrace Iíve ever stood on was the upper bit of the Holte end in the 74 SF replay. Quite frankly it was so high up that you were on the same level as the mist that night.
Back in the day the standing area alone at Hampden park must have been at least 135000. The lack of safety makes my shiver just thinking about it. How more accidents like Ibrox, Burnden Park and Hillsborough didnít happen is a complete mystery.

You can see the size of the South end at The Valley if you go out the other side of the Jimmy Seed Stand and you to the bigs at the back there.

I remember entering into that massive bowl about 1970. I gasped at the enormity of the terrace on the side, with weeds sprouting everywhere; more weeds than fans it seemed. For the record we won 1-0, with Malcolm Partridge the scorer. At the time I thought we had a real star on our hands.

This great team they scored one, and all that.
l wasn't't there but some of my older mates said that they had a gun pulled on them in their end.

I was up near the top of that massive terrace when the Who walked onstage to the opening chords of Baba O'Reilly in 1974

Went there in 1979 jock Wallace era, they were building what is the away end now. We were put down the side opposite that massive terrace which had a ice cream van parked at the top. All the ground has bet redevelop since then.
