What car should I buy ?

Report Message | Email Message To A Friend | Reply To Message

Had my little old Fiesta wrote off last week after someone decided to rearrange the rear end.

Mrs B would like me to go for another Fiesta, but I could do with some advice.
The old Fiesta was a 1.4

If a buy one approx 3 years old the choices are.....

1.0 ecoboost (petrol)
1.25 (petrol)
1.5 Titanium Tdci ( diesal)

After having a 1.4 I don't want to drop too much in power, so I would think that rules out the 1.25.
I know nothing about a 1.0 ecoboost, and I have never had a diesal.

Can anyone give me any help regarding what they would consider the best option, given that I don't want something that's lacks a bit of umph.

Would the ecoboost perform anywhere near the size of a 1.5 Tdci or is that pie in the sky.

Help please

Brauny. Go and drive each of them you'll find which one you like best. Personally I'd have the diesel everytime for the extra power and good fuel economy.

Colville, I was sceptical because I always thought that a diesel was a bit inferior in terms of power next to an unleaded one.
Am I wrong?

Depends which version of the Ecoboost engine you get. They come in three flavours in the Fiesta 100/125/140 and my wife has had two both of which were the 125 version and both have been excellent cars. For comparison the diesel is rated at 85hp and the 1.25 petrol is 81hp.

They have both been used locally and on long trips (Scotland and Cornwall for example) and both were happy to cruise at the legal limit all day.Have not had any reliability issues with either of them but they have been serviced each year irrespective of their mileage.

Agree with willie. Gotfor the 1.0L. If you can stretch to the 125bhp model then do it, if not the 100bhp is still decent.

Alternatively, try an astra 1.4 125bhp. From the 16 plate you get decent wheels, 7 inch screen, auto lights etc as standard.

Be careful of the Eco Boost. It's a 3 cylinder engine that need to be maintained properly. If you're buying one second hand make sure it's had the Ford recall done on the cooling system because if not it can lead to catastrophic engine failure. The diesel is a gutsy little thing and will pull well from low revs.

I'd go for a diesel but they are now public enemy number one according to the government, we've got a fiesta 1.0 ecoboost and we love it.

Brauny, The Diesel will have more power than the small petrol engines. the eco boost is only a 3 cylinder engine but go and take a test drive in each is my advice and just see which feels the best to you before you part with your money.

Thanks people, its all appreciated.

Will certainly have a test drive. I confess my knowledge of cars in general is not great, so any decent advice be it positive or negative is welcome.

Ford make decent cars and because thereís so many of them around parts are cheap and any garage can fix them.

Also Ford have taken full responsibility for the cooling problems and will replace engines if needs be.

I recently asked the garage I use a similar question to what you're asking here. He reckoned you can expect any of the 1.0 three cylinder engines to have half the life expectancy of a 4 cylinder.

I drive a 2 year old ecoboost, had it from new, before that had the 1.25 2016 model, nice car to drive but a bit gutless. Should have bought the ecoboost then. Love the ecoboost ,which is the 100 version. 6 speed gear box, service interval is TWO years or 18000 miles. Get yourself down to Sandicliffe's for a test drive. Or go on the web site and check out the spec
