A few months ago there was a meeting in Parliament regarding safe standing. I read much of the transcript from the meeting where pretty much every MP said the same, it needs to be seriously looked into and considered, and trialled, however they cannot allow football to become like it was back in the 80s.

Spurs have installed rails in a part of their new ground (their big home end I think) and Wolves have also put in rails at their smaller end at Molineux. Now Man United have said theyíll do similar in the summer at Old Trafford.

Since the Government meeting, there has been a review and it appears they have studied the areas at Molineux & White Hart Lane and there has been no ill effects between supporters or between the fans and stewards, and they are happy to do a trial.

That has to be great news for everyone involved in the game, doesnít it?

Yes

Hopefully when our ground is extended theyíll rail part of the Kop to encourage the old codgers to move out and the youth to move in.

Itís coming as it should. Interesting on radio 5 live last night one guy said that the authorities have caved in to the bullies as they wonít sit down at matches. Itís an interesting one but as the Germans have proved it works and is 100% safer than now which is surely what it about.

I'm not sure the majority of Leicester fans want to stand up. I remember our last away game at Peterborough (before the Moyes End terrace was flattened). The amount of complaints from the new breed of fans (most of whom have never stood at the football before) about not being able to see properly, and it being too crowded, getting pushed, men urinating against the outside wall at half time etc etc.. Why the hell did they buy tickets for the game when it was standing?
Great atmosphere that day, even though we lost..

Read a piece that said Man U are installing 1500 safe standing seats this season and expect to be able to trial it before the end of the season. It's being done in an area with persistent standing.

Can see this causing major grief.

Safe standing will never produce the same atmosphere as a packed terrace, the facking Taylor report ripped out the heart and soul of English football.

Iím sorry but youíre wrong. The atmosphere created at every German stadium mainly from the safe standing areas is amazing. Ask Dags.
Also the old way we used to stand on packed terraces was an accident waiting to happen. How Hillsborough didnít happen before is a miracle. Yes standing in the Kop at Filbo was great but also blŰody dangerous.

What will come first at Filbert Way? A passenger rail link or safe standing?

Mr Tumble has already trialed safe standing and proved that it is not only safe, but also generates a fantastic atmosphere. So let's stop faffing about and get on with it [^]

What do the FA have against it? With the rails on every row its surely safer than seating and much safer than a terrace.

The problem with the old terracing was the greed of football clubs, pack em in like sardines that was the motto back then and stuff the consequences. Surely a properly constructed and controlled terrace isn't beyond stadia construction in this day and age is it without all the palarva of rails and stuff. I know it's all pie in the sky but an area terracing designed to hold two thousand in comfort would be as safe as seating, wouldn't it?

The problem wasn't the terracing, it was the bottle necks. The penning them in made it even worse.

Hillsborough would not have happened if the fans hadn't been fenced in. Yes there were other factors too, including poor policing, but if those metal fences weren't there, the tragedy would not have occurred.

As nobody is suggesting bringing those fences back, then surely terraces can be made to be safe.

Bnet, you are a grand old sage of the Sixties, don't you think that some of those cup replays at Filbert Street passed without incident was by more luck than judgement. The seating capacity of Filbert Street was a shade over ten thosand making the standing patrons at over THIRTY THOUSAND on the remaing parts of Filbert Street, that Everton game was unbelievably over subscribed, I was only 8 at the time but I remember it like it was yesterday, my feet hardly touched the floor throughout the game

Moving on to the early 90's, post Hillsborough, the fences were removed from Filbert Street kop, apart from a low fence that was easy to climb over, and the numbers in each pen were controlled properly, making it much safer. It wasn't necessary to scrap standing all together.

At Gladbach where I often spend my weekends the standing areas are just a terrace. The difference
is itís still a modern stadium with plenty of entrances up to the stands like all modern stadia has, and they only allow people with a ticket in that block into that area.

Yes itís crowded but it never feels dangerous.
