I know the dates for this protest were set to coincide with the global protest, but they are wasting their time at the minute.

With the whole Brexit fiasco, our government has far too much on their plate at the minute to give this cause the full attention it merits.

If or when we leave the EU thatís when the party in charge of building our recovery can begin to get involved with this kind of topic.

These idiots are targeting Melbourne and Sydney, the ABC news interviewed two very young kids bought to the protests by their idiotic parents who were no more than six years old and they thought the world was ending before Christmas .

This crowd of lunatics grandparents parents probably marched in the 1960's to ban nuclear weapons that was a lost cause now the grandkids have another lost cause how sad for them.

The thing is, they have a point. We do need to do something pretty urgently about climate change. They might be wrong on the timing (it seems like they're taking the absolute worst case scenarios as their base case), but the main point they're trying to make is probably sound. So it's a shame that their methods and behaviour seem designed to alienate as many people as possible. It's as if they value their own self-righteousness far above the actual cause they're ostensibly promoting.

It's not so much the means - it's more the way they present their argument. First they put forward extreme interpretations that aren't backed by science and therefore can be easily dismissed by sceptics, then they make literally impossible demands like zero carbon emissions by 2025. And the whole time they're doing this they act as if all they really want to do is to parade around in bizarre fancy dress. It just makes it easy for their opponents to dismiss them. On Sunday I watched an interview with two Extinction Rebellion representatives and they were effectively demanding that the government disbands itself in favour of a 'citizen's assembly' whose sole objective would be to tackle climate change. Obviously that is never going to happen, so the fact that they were seriously demanding it made them come across as completely barmy and unhinged. They're not going to win over many people like that.

Whilst they have every right to protest they do not have the right to prevent people going about their business.

All they've achieved so far is to upset the people they want to get on board and demonstrate staggering levels of hypocrisy

Thanks Clapham.

But isn't that the case with the most initiatives regardless of where they come from, or what they're about (whether it's climate-related or otherwise)?

That you're presented with a worse-case scenario, people review it, & then you arrive at a compromise, e.g. zero carbon emissions happens by say 2035 or 2045?

Because, let's face it to do nothing would be foolish.

And in any case, what would be the worst that could happen if we all reduced our carbon footprint, pollution etc?

if the government are working non stop on other priorities then why was boris wandering around hospitals and book launches yesterday? he found time to leak to the spectator how difficult he will make life for the EU if they extend brexit, to help achieve his aim of no-deal cash in.

by any objective measure, the climate should be the priority over brexit. it will literally end human life on this planet if we carry on as we are.

these guys are a pain in the arrse, but they are keeping it at the top of the news agenda. they would be better to target their protests more accurately, and bring people along with them rather than alienating them. but at least they are trying something.

I was in Netherlands over the weekend on my way to Germany. I bought a take away coffee from a shop in the station and the cup and lid were both compostable.

If a country the size of Netherlands is doing its bit then we also should. If we do become independent again we should lead the way on these kind of issues. Be seen by the rest of the world as a leader on these issues.

If you really want to control air quality then you need control of the population.

How many times have you sat in a traffic jam burning far more fuel than you need for the journey because far too many live on a small island.

Why build over green belt to house more people not only does that create more pollution these homes are never near employment so more travelling less food.

Stop the spin and live in the real world of never ending needs of more people the lie of unlimited growth .

It's quite clear there are people from all walks of life and political persuasions involved.
Still if you can't destroy their argument just throw a label at them and hope the masses are stupid enough to fall for it.

For once (and this seems to be the only time) I am in agreement with Suffers.
They presented a slide to us at work that showed all our green efforts would have about 2% of the effect of having one less child. Then they ignored the slide and told us the best things we could do were to save water, cycle to work and recycle our waste.
Maybe, on a global basis, we need to take a look at if we really want to save the lives of people over a certain age once they get ill? Maybe we shouldn't be trying to cure cancer. Maybe we should sterilise people who can't afford to have and look after their children? All difficult issues that will not get addressed as there is no political benefit to do so.

It starts with literally everything we do. Even the choice between putting something into a bin or a recycling bin is often not even given a moments thought.

If there not wearing toe protectors and a hard hat, or a suit and brief case are you assuming they're not in employment.

They've been interviewing a number of protesters on the radio this morning, all seemed to have taken a days holiday.

Obviously you won't believe that as it was on the BBC and LBC.

Hackney, please explain what "crashing out" means ? lf my phone is cut off l won't die, same applies to anything that you all think we need to remain breathing. What will we lose and surely £39b should cushion this alleged catastrophe !

You are working from the basis that the EU is better than being a soverign country, is there any evidence of this. Please don't use the reason that we will all be at war with the rest of europe without the EU.

Never claimed that we will be at war with the EU should we leave with No Deal.

I'm aware that generators can run without diesel, my brother in law has invented one.
Loads of companies interested including Northern Power, Scottish Power and mining concerns in Australia.
He's finding it hard to get anywhere with it as all these companies hire generators.
The hire companies won't buy his product because they also sell the diesel to run the generators and that's where they make most of their profit.

None of this changes the fact that human based climate change is a fact.

Nothing to worry you're empty heads about. It's all a con just to keep you all in line and in a constant state of worry. That's how they operate. Fear is the biggest primeval emotion and they use it like a sheepdog herding the flock in whichever way they choose. Trouble is most people are so gullible and trusting that everything they read and hear in the media is true. Sprinkle a few science facts and statistics and the mugs lap it up and spout it all as their very own ideas. Clowns to the left Jokers to the right here I am stuck in the middle with you.[rle]
