Drug addiction

Just caught a bit on the news talking about how many people are addicted to prescription drugs, most of which have a side effect ‘could cause suicidal tendencies’

Then without a link ran a story about how suicide is on the increase.

Now, I might be a mad conspiracy theorist, but, eh what?

I remember quite a few years ago going to the doctor about stomach pains. While I was there he asked me how things were 'in general' and I happened to mention that I'd been feeling a bit low as my grandmother had recently died and I'd just broken up with my girlfriend (or rather she had broken up with me). Without any further discussion, he offered to prescribe me antidepressant medication. I remember being shocked at how casual he was about it. I refused.

Obviously many people suffer from depression and require medication. That's fine. But if people who are just feeling down (which is part of being human) are encouraged to think that they need drugs to 'cure' themselves, then it's no surprise that this leads to widespread addiction.

Same here Clapham. Went much along the same lines of dicussion. I just said no way I'm not depressed just need to get fit, eat better and get out and socialise more which I did and was then fine. Doctors are too quick to resort to the drugs as the solution. I took beta blockers once and my god I was like One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest after his lobotomy. Not only that but mine is desperate to keep me off work with a sick note every time I go regardless of what I go in for. I would have been sacked if I'd taken them all.
