It was pretty quiet on here yesterday, Iím sure many will have been listening in, I was in the car driving back from Manchester.

To ask us to play two defensive innings so soon after the miracle of Headingley was asking too much of us. We lost this game because we gave away far too many runs in the first innings. We didnít take our chances.

To be honest weíve been chasing the series and have looked like weíve been ever since we failed to take the last two wickets quickly in the first innings of the first test on Day 1 at Edgbaston.

Australia have had the run of the green more often than England have had. Then again you make your own luck and in Smith we have a true competitor, one who has turned a baying crowd into one who stand and applaud him and his feats with the bat. We are lacking someone like him. Someone that inspires the batsman at the other end of the crease that they can achieve great things.

Well played Australia. Itís a tough thing to do in test cricket to win a series away from home, and with one to play theyíve put themselves in a great position to do just this. If (and itís a big if) we can finally get Steve Smith out cheaply we may save the series as a draw.

Keep the Ashes safe. I look forward to our attempts in 2021 to wrestle the urn back home.

Never winning the WC has been a stain on English cricket for decades.

So at the start of the summer I would have settled for putting that right at the expense of not regaining the Ashes.

The test team needs a major rebuild anyway (struggle to remember such an ill-balanced batting order) so the next couple of years should be interesting

There have been several periods of play in the games this summer where the captaincy has been lacking in creativity or aggression. I reckon Root has to be the first change.

For me you're right.

Stand Root down.
Bring in Foakes and tell Bairstow to shut it and concentrate on batting.
Get rid of Roy and Denly.
Rest Archer so he's not overloaded.
Blood another quick, Broad and especially Anderson haven't got long before the knackers yard.

I'd actually make Broad captain for a bit so as not to overload responsibility on Stokes.

Don't agree that they got the rub of the green though.

If they hadn't rinsed that review Stokes was stone dead out and it would have been over with 2 to go.

And it's not like we didn't ride our luck in the World Cup.

I don't think I can ever recall a series that was so massively reliant on one player to determine the outcome. I still feel it's a shame that the player concerned is a proven cheat. And I think that history will prove that his 'punishment' was so lenient that it proved to be a real benefit to his career.
Shame, because that must have been the worst Australian batting line-up in living memory, only England's was worse. But there was some good bowling, and at times the legacy of too much one-day / 20-20 cricket actually helped rather than hindered things.
Root isn't a great captain, but there are probably more important problems to address first.

Think yourselfs lucky to not have the Australian media view .

The ABC report this morning started off with "We have beaten the enemy in his own backyard " then they gloated for what seemed far to long .

The commercial news was far more cutting and belittling.

England's football team are flat track bullies. Bottle it when it really matters.
Back to cricket though and the Aussies deserved their win.
Root averaged around 30 to Steve Smith's 130
Archer was overbowled at Lord's and then when they were 44_4 at Old Trafford Root let Australia off the hook bowling Leach and Overton.
He's not a great Captain when the chips are down but Roy, Bairstow, Buttler have all been bang average.
Been great viewing though.

Agree that the Smith penalty was lenient - Amir got 5 years for spot-fixing and I fail to see how taking sandpaper onto the pitch to deliberately alter the state of the ball is any less serious.

Bowling a no-ball is not going to alter the outcome of a match - altering the condition of the ball certainly could.

And then we are meant to believe that the rest of the team, and especially the bowlers, were completely unaware of what was happening - really?

And cheating undermines previous results - remember how the last time we toured Oz their bowlers were getting hooping reverse swing and ours couldn't - perhaps we know why now?

And I wouldn't open the curtains to watch Smith bat - but that's another matter!

This country plays red ball cricket at the wrong time, april and september on green pitches encourages medium paced trundlers to put it on a length without working very hard
Overton not good enough tried him in oz and found wanting, i cannot believe they havent played foakes or given curran a go as a different option left arm and swings it.Roy not test match quality and bairstow gets bowled too often to be top class, buttler one day cricketer. We need to be pkaying red ball cricket in the summer but no chance now they are introducing this ridiculous100 concept.

Hierachy burying their heads in the sand all series.

Roy was and will never be a test opener. Every man and his dog knew that.

Root basically passed off the leadership to Stokes at times at Old Trafford - so maybe just make him captain now. Root's captaincy is weak and his form has suffered. Stokes can lead by example.

Overton jumped quite a queue to get in last game and did nothing with the ball to warrant his selection. Woakes back in or Curran who did well last summer with bat and ball.

We dont need two white ball wicket keeper batsmen in one test team so replace either Bairstow or Buttler with a red ball batsman.

Ed Smith has his head up his arris. The test team has been pretty woeful in recent years.

Australia were lucky Anderson stupidly harmed his injury and was out all series. Even with a few more overs in him we would have converted 122-8 into an all out far far quicker on day 1 which has set the tone for them and gave them a huge amount of confidence.

Australia were lucky with the early rain at Lords on day 5 otherwise we would have won that test match.

Smith has ridden his luck a bit in a few innings but as I said he has made his own luck.

They were also lucky that Labuschagne got his chance by Smithís injury. Heís their second highest scorer.

Yes there was some luck with our last wicket partnership at Headingley but again Stokes made his own luck.

Weíve a long winter ahead with series away at New Zealand, South Africa and then back to Sri Lanka. Oddly we only play two 3 test home series next summer, the rest is all white ball cricket leading up to the World 20/20 competition in Australia next autumn.

Good bloke that Tim de Lisle[:O]

I wouldn't necessarily put all the blame on the players though, it's the cretins that pick them tell them where to bat where the problem lies.

Apparently Jason Roy has never batted out 2 sessions of county cricket. Denly hasn't opened for 5 years.

It's a bit mental.

Agree with Shane about Woakes but they'll no doubt stand by Overton because of his blocking capabilities rather than bowling.

I still play cricket and it is getting harder and harder to keep kids interested past the age of 14. The schools donít help us as the teachers canít be bothered the game will die off at grass roots if we are not careful whilst the ecb happily charge £150 quid for a ticket to the test matches. Also at the World Cup I tried to get tickets online for some of the games but I was informed they were sold out, then on tv you see empty seats all over the ground at some matches.
Is this the corporate mob just buying them up and then canít be bothered?

For the life of me I can't work out why they aren't spending the money being invested in the hundred nonsense on the T20 which is growing in popularity and attendance year on year.

They are blinded by Sky's money. Sky do an excellent job but the audience is rubbish as people haven't got it.

What's wrong with using that as a lobbying tool to at least have Test and 1 day highlights on terrestrial and at least one T20 domestic game on every Friday night.

Sky's money has been a double edged sword.

Injected money into grassroots and also managed to stop the kids from being able to see it on telly.

It will be nice for the county to get the much needed cash injection from the hundred bribe and for it then to die on its arris.

At my school we used to have something called a cricket week - after the exams, the boys used to get the afternoons off to go and watch the first eleven, who would have arranged a series of matches. It used to be fun to watch, and to play in when we were older. Are there any 'cricket weeks' now? I doubt it.

Iím starting to get a pathological dislike of Jonny Bairstow.

Another plum LBW leading to another wasted review to try and save his own skin.

Foakes took a belting stumping today...

I feel a bit sorry for Denny being asked to open when he isnít an opener. Burns looks the ticket tho.

I think that's why this summer has been so disappointing. The Aussies' batting has been truly awful, with the obvious exception plus a few decent innings from others like ML when it mattered.
The big unanswered question is whether Anderson would've got Smith out for less than 80-odd a few times Ė that would've won the Ashes back.
The next two or three days may paper over some of the cracks...

So after all that cricket over the five test matches, and the victory today albeit in a slight dead rubber, we deserved to win two of the four test matches, the two at London.

We probably deserved to lose the other three on the balance of play, only a Stokes and Leach miracle partnership gave us the win at Headingley.

Thereís plenty to build on but plenty of changes need to happen too over the course of the winter.

Roll on New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka, and 8 test matches in all.
