The fella that looks like Doc out of Back to the Future.

Today he's slashed 20p a pint across the board to prove the benefits of leaving the EU.

Even though we are at this precise moment in the EU, which indicates he's been fleecing his customer base by 20p a pint.

Yes it does the EU sets a minimum rate of 15% VAT , we never had that before joining the EU remember it started at 10% .

That means you only get 80p in every pound you spend on goods and services.

It was the name that changed. Prior to VAT we had purchase tax. In 1973 Purchase Tax of 25% was replaced by VAT of 10%.

Why would the EU set a minimum rate if it did not benefit, all members have to set a rate of 15% plus.

Explain why Australia has been offered a FTA with the EU with no FOM and no payment of billions per year , the UK is getting mugged .

seems like UK VAT rate is 20 per cent so not sure how the EU minimum of 15 per cent affects life in the UK whatsoever. It raises £181 billion pounds pa which is about the same as income tax...so Mr Weatherspoon...what's it to be - no VAT and double the income tax ??

He should start paying his staff a decent wage, most of them have prop themselves up with tax credits just to get by. In effect his business model uses state funds to meet his wage bill.

Iím not sure what youíre so confused about bnet , itís very straightforward..

Wetherspoon beer is not more expensive as a result of EU imposed VAT - itís more expensive because of UK imposed VAT. So any suggestion that the EU makes our beer more expensive is just a lie. If the contention is that once we leave the EU we will be able to get rid of VAT (and make our beer and lots of other things cheaper ) then we need to know how weíre making up the revenue in the public finances? Are we doubling income tax or cutting public spending by half? Selling off the NHS maybe?

Then you seem to think it laughable that a billionaire could be thick. Utterly unthinkable. I disagree. That in a nutshell, is it.

l have never mentioned the price of beer, l don't car how much beer is or how much Tim Martin charges for it or what he says.

You can not be a self made billionaire and be thick, end of.

I know one billionaire who can't read or write, well he couldn't, but hes far from thick. Hes also self made, well its the owner of the Range. l know a lot of self made millionaires and a few worth 100's of millions and not one of them could be described as anything else bar very smart. l think its bizarre that you really think that you can make a billion and be thick.

Is Tim Martin actually a billionaire?

I would question whether he is exactly self-made since he went to one of NIís poshest schools and is the son of a Guinness executive - so not exactly rags to riches.

Finally itís a pub chain ffs - he hasnít found a cure for cancer...

There are Russians around who were literally given huge parts of lucrative industries by a series of corrupt Russian presidents. Yes they are self made billionaires - are they clever? No.

I believe his business model revolves around buying up large quantities of beer thatís not far from going stale at knock down prices.

Then shifting it very quickly through his extensive pub portfolio before it gives you the toms.

Iím pretty sure thatís a load of nonsense today. Apart from the ales, all other beers they sell are standard in every pub so if that was true the brewers must be rubbish making so much extra to sell to Wetherspoons at a knock down price.

Anyway it has nothing to do with anything other than a good marketing ploy which has worked as a number of people on here are chatting about their brand.

Itís another straight banana thing [rle]

ĎThe aim of the EU VAT directive (Council Directive 2006/112/EC of 28 November 2006 on the common system of value added tax) is to harmonize VAT within the EU VAT area, and specifies that VAT rates must be within a certain range.[3] It has several basic purposes:[citation needed]

Harmonization of VAT law (content);
Harmonization of content and layout of the VAT declaration;
Regulation of accounting, providing a common legal accounting framework;
Detailed description of invoices (article 226) and receipts (article 226b), meaning that member states have a common invoice framework;
Regulation of accounts payable;
Regulation of accounts receivable;
Standard definition of national accountancy and administrative terms.
The VAT directive is published in all EU official languages.[citation needed]í

That all says they need VAT to set the amount they rob off its members , the UK does not pay the same amount every year and the EU demands more if the take from VAT rises .

Who cares?

From the moment youíre born every penny you earn is taxed and everything you spend your hard earned on is taxed. Well mostly.

If you have something left over when you die that is taxed too before your inheritance is passed to family or friends.

Whether the percentages of tax are decided in the UK Parliament or the EU Parliament is of no real concern of mine to be honest. This wonít change much post November or whenever.
