In Coocckeny Roofers' summer bash.
Remember Jimmy Bloomfield in 1976/7.
All hopes built up and ended up mid table.
Jimmy gets the tin tack.
And what happens???
McLintock and relegation that's what.

Mind you it makes a refreshing change from the usual pessimism.[^]

I entirely agree. People seem to be assuming that we'll make top 6. And what is worse, pundits. I don't like it - it's not right.

Nice to be optimistic and positive but we should take nothing for granted.

I would love us to finish above arsenal. That would be payback for all the defeats at The Emirates Stadium that we deserved something out of.

Of what is now the big 6, Man City and Liverpool are stable and Tottenham should be steady.

The other three all have issues.

Man United have deep rooted problems that are widely known.

Chelsea have a manager who has probably joined them a year or two too early. They have just lost their best player and have a transfer ban so will have to work on their young guns and hope there is enough there to keep them in the top 6.

arsenal have a fairly weak squad and I read this morning their captain Koscielny has refused to travel on a pre season tour to America to try and engineer a move to France.

This is where the optimism comes from. Surely we can mix it amongst these damaged teams?

We will not have long to wait to find out, Daggers. The first week of the season will provide a clue.

I'm less worried about those teams than I am about Everton, Wolves, West Ham, Norwich, Villa, Bournemouth and the rest. They're not simply going to lie down and let us walk all over them on the basis of a few newspaper articles. They may have plans of their own.

I think mid table again.

I also think Lampard will do well at Chelsea and keep them top 6 no problem

Why do you think that Lampard will do well at Chelsea?

I'm not having a go, I just wonder why you think he'll be successful...after all he only has one fairly mediocre season in management in the Championship to his name...

just a hunch. He'll get full support from all quarters and I think he's the right material.
Could be way off the mark though!

Man U and Chelsea may have made the same sort of mistake we made in appointing Shakespeare. Top 6 is there for the taking, but we still need to strengthen defensively - especially at LB

Im sure Everton, West Ham etc all have plans and a desire to break into the top six this season. We know first hand how difficult a challenge that is though and even though Man U, arsenal and Chelsea are in a spot of bother those teams are unlikely to suddenly fall from grace and become mid table sides overnight.

Like many I have a real desire for more European football. By hook or by crook we really need to try to qualify for another campaign next season.

Well actually trying hard to win a Cup might help us get into Europe.

The cups Soho. Yesteryears competitions I hear you cry. Thats why Id love us to win one. Not only a cup but straight into the EL group stages. No need to be going to the Faroe Islands in July.
I firmly believe this a great opportunity. No pre season shenanigans going off to the Far East for meaningless matches, a manager who knew he needed 10 games to look at us last season, 3 great buys including the big one in Tielemans, a great squad ethic ( something some of the big boys can only dream about), and everybody back in training by next Monday apart from Wilf whos poncing with the pharaohs trying to win some daft cup.
All in all we should be confident. Keep everyone fit, especially Vardy and with a good start we could be top 4/6 by the end of October. Everton worry me but hopefully Zouma will go back to Chelsea.

The Cups are not what they were.
But as you say - and as MON sussed out - they do provide a direct route into the group stages of the Europa League.
Whereas finishing 7th gets you to Moldova in July.

Moldova, Faroe Islands or some other place with no direct flights. If they do have direct flights were up against all the families going on their holibobs paying top dollar. No thanks. As much as I miss it, its nice to have 2-3 months away from all things LCFC
