I'm off to Hamster Jam next week for 3 nights with my good mate Neil. We've got the basic itinerary sorted. We've pre-booked visits to take in some culture (Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum) as well as some champagne socialist (Eh?! Ed.) restos. Got a few 'brown' (is that term allowed in these political correctness gone mad days?) caffs lined up too.

Any tips from the BR 'cognoscenti' would be most welcome. Where can you get a good cup of tea for example?

It's been at least 40 years ago but the Banana Club was good. The ale was a bit steep at a fiver for a quarter of a pint though.

If the weathers decent (sit outside) check out the Ij Brewery (Brouwerij 't IJ) in the east under a large windmill. Very popular. Great choice of beers but has very odd opening hours so check. Bin loads of times (relatives live there) much better beer than the Amstel/Heinekin cr*p.

Westerkerk Tower very close to Anne Frank Museum. Great views of Amsterdam from the top and worth a visit.

Oh, I left a teddy bear with a friend when I was out there last, you couldn’t pick it up for me could you please?
Sentimental value.

The Modern Art museum was very good.
The sex museum near the station is good too.
The red light district is a shadow of what it was.

Hire one of them dutch 'anne frank' bike, just ride around in aimless circles over the endless bridges. It's fun.

Then with the bike, head to the backside of central station, hop on a free ferry across to the north side of the river, follow the canal footpath and within 1.5 miles you are in Holland of tulips and windmills.

I'm always amazed that anyone still thinks it's cool/rebellious to smoke dope . Those places were full of UK stag do lads or weirdo middle aged, middle class Americans

When MT and CF went recently, I advised them to go to Hoppe bar and the very civilised Cafe Luxembourg, which lie side by side on Spui Square. They never made it, so you have to carry the flag. Hopefully CL still has the lovely waitresses in long aprons and short skirts.

Went there every year with mates.

Poor choice of food for a city.

Stayed two nights and would go for chinese and indian food.

We dropped the chinese and did indian and a steak house.
Then we dropped the indian and did both nights at the steak house.

I stopped being a veggie in Amsterdam.

I went a couple of years ago with a friend. We took some mushrooms and sat in a bar and all was going well until my friend decided to step outside to smoke a joint we'd bought earlier (I declined, considering the mushroom/beer combination sufficient). Cue an evening of utter chaos when my friend became so paranoid that he was convinced that everybody, including me, was in on a plot to kill him. Yay.

We found Dutch cuisine a bit boring.
Our favourite restaurants were the Indonesian ones.Lovely grub.
Not quite like Chinese and not quite like Indian. A lot of peanut based sauces. If you are not peanut allergic.

In de Wildeman. Over 200 beers available, not too crowded and close to the train station.

When done properly, Amsterdam is like visiting a different planet.

It is the only place where I've rolled around laughing in the middle of the street and also stared at a wall for several hours.

Too many stories to tell...

Many thanks for all the helpful information. I think in order to make the best of our time there we'll eschew the mushrooms and Camberwell Carrots(I've seen the recent damage they did to charleyfarley - not a pretty sight) and just stick with the beer.

I'll keep an eye out for the bear mac. What does it look like?

As per Ketterfox's post... Brouwerij 't IJ is a must. Great place, and great beers.
Bit of a walk from the centre, but well worth it.
