Died five years ago today.
A great loss to British public life.

Earning £140,000 a year and still carried on living in his rented council house - which could have been released to another more deserving tenant.
Hateful and Millwall to boot.

Agree one of the last really effective union leaders. Despite his reputation London transport rarely were on strike because he was prepared to negotiate to get a deal. He knew his job was to look after his members and they stood by him. The result being iTFL are one of very exceptions in the public sector where wages and t and cís have not been ravaged. Shame he was a Millwall fan though.

Yes he lived in a Woodford council house so what, I know when he first lived in it he was on a low wage. I didnít know you had to move when you go rewarded for doing a good job. His legacy is tfl Staff are among the few in the public who can stiff afford to live in the City they work and live In.

He was nicking a council house when he could easily have bought a gaff and released the council house for a more deserving family.
He was a greedy, grasping, selfish caant.
And if you think tube drivers on 50 Grand a year for doing faack all is reasonable then you are living on another planet.

Never mind,George. Let the drivers steer the trains while you just make sure you are standing clear of the doors!

Hopefully a different one to you Soho . Do f all? really when escorting the victims of the tube bombs of the tracks. Have you seen the result of a bloke chucking himself under a train, this happens regularly. Very reasonable to me.

People moan about tube workers salary & t & c's all the time.

There are frequent recruitment drives for those interested.

Perhaps, the weekend working, 5am starts,1am finishes, bank holiday & boxing day working put a few off.

As well as working alongside the Great British public.

soho...Chill, you seem to get more miserable by the day, and for a guy who worked in a trade where there seem to be no ethics, or very little, it seems a bit strange OR
you have got the reaction you seem to need !

I've always thought that Bob Crow was a dangerous pinko commie traitor who should have been imprisoned for sedition many years ago.
So this is not recent miseryness on my part.
And all striking tube drivers should one by one be sacked for gross misconduct and replaced with driverless trains which TFL have been developing on test tracks in Old Dalby in Leicestershire for years now.

Walthamstowe, you do realise that lots of people work anti social shifts don't you.

Flexible starting and finishing times have been part of railway life since railways were invented

So because others work anti-social shifts the train/tube drivers should do the same for a poor salary???

Should we make a comparison between whatever your trade is and a cleaner?

Where have I said they deserve less money?

My only comment was they don't seem to give a flying one for the poor commuters that get messed around when "negotiations" don't go their way

Nice to see soho developing some socialist tendencies in his old age, wanting a council house put to use for someone in greater need.

Does that mean he'll be voting for a party that wants to raise taxes on the rich to enable more money to be out to use for those in greater need?

The role of a trade union official is to try and get for members job security, safety at work, best possible pay and terms and conditions and a decent pension. If Bob Crow achieved those for his members fair play to him seems he was pretty good at his job.

'Dangerous traitor'. Says it all really - standing up for his members is dangerous to whom? And who or what was he betraying?
If all union leaders stood up as he did (and earned the money they get) those in power would not be walking all over us however they like.
That's the real betrayal.

Hackney, I was merely pointing out that anti social working hours are not exclusive to the TfL staff in reply to his post suggesting that they did something out of the ordinary.

Can you imagine the reaction if a banker on £140K was living in a council house?

Already the Central Line, Northern Line, District Line, Hammersmith and City Line, Circle Line and Waterloo and City Line, London Overground and obviously the DLR trains all drive themselves. The others will follow in the next few years starting with th new Crossrail / Elizabeth Line trains when that finally opens.

Then there will be huge upheaval when TFL starts talks about getting rid of the drivers.

Victoria Line too. But who fancies being on a train several 100 feet below ground without any driver on board?

London Overground from Liverpool st aren't driverless, the stock is all about 30 years old.

Whist realising that how he houses himself is just another Daily Mail inspired smear, he probably prefers to live among the sort of people he represents.
And where is the proof that he rents from a council and did not buy it under Thatcher's giveaway?

Because he admitted in an interview before he died that he still rents his council house.
Probably needed to in order to placate his Soviet KGB handlers and put them off the scent that he was trousering a fortune in salary.
