May's & Ron's already mentioned
Add Oldham's tools, Brees music, Jimmy Walsh's newsagents all decent establishments gone, replaced by several nail bars & cash converters.
Pubs, less of a shock. Been dire for years. Not since the days of the Fish and Quart, Longstop & Loughborough arms has there been anywhere worth having a pint.

It used to be a pleasant and interesting street. Nowadays I pass along as quickly as possible, wearing a stab proof vest.

The furniture store at the bottom with the Art Deco tower thing is still hanging in there. I also remember back in the 70's a French restaurant, would it be l'epicure??

I once painted and sign-wrote on the big gates of Mick Berman's garage (any motor racing fans remember his Ford Bepop at Mallory?) which was halfway down Churchgate. I return he resprayed my old VW camper. I made a better job of it than he did...

The one that became Memsaab for a while? That was The Dixie Arms when I used to go past on the way to City or me Grandmas. I went in when it was The Workhouse (before ambling down to the fan Club). It did become another bar for a short unsuccessful while too, the name of which escapes me. I was working opposite at the time so did use it but not many others did by that time.

The Green Bowler!one of Leicesters top Mod hideouts during the mid sixties ! it was the Conservative club at one time I believe ,but after its Green Bowler days it went on to become EckysClub (Beaton) . always very wary of walking past the Bowler in my greaser days especially during the outbreak of trouble during Aug 1966 between Leicesters Mods and Rockers ,virtually forgotten now but anyone in a leather jacket walking past the Bowler would find himself being chased down Church Gate by gangs of lads with extremely silly backcombed hair styles.

The Workhouse (i remember handing out flyers for one of our gigs there, i think) and the Fan club. Now I feel old.
I used to hit all the music shops to see if they had anything decent. Brees, Carlsboro, Humbucker, the place on Granby Street near the porno shop, and the one just past the railway station on London road, and i'm sure there was one on Belvior street near new walk while i was at leicester Poly as i almost blew my whole terms grant on a 66 Tele with a bigsby (only 500 quid back then)

I think like quite a few on here I was born round the corner on causeway lane so have always had something of an soft spot for church gate . Drinking in the stop and the Loughborough was always fun, fish and quart when had the money. Even bought the kids toys down there , then dobbed in bruciani. Walking up the top end leaving. Churchgate to go wherever was faced with the eclipse. That was an experience.

Despite the good memories of the Longstop and Fish and quart itís a complete dump these days.

I canít think of another city that would have such a XXXXXXhole bang in the City centre.

Although itís like Knightsbridge compared to Belgrave gate and Humberstone Gate !

Whilst Churchgate May look poor the street is over 1000 years old having a name of Viking origin and marked the line of the city wall. Butt Close Lane was where they practised archery. So when you walk down there you are walking through history.
