Modern Life is Rubbish... The last genuinely organically grown football craze swept the country in the latter half of the 1988-89 season. Stoke City had their Pink Panthers, West Ham their hammers, Grimsby had Harry the Haddock and a flock of canaries hovered above the Norwich crowd.

It was football’s ‘Summer of Love’. The fanzine movement was taking off in a big way and hooliganism was in steep decline following the Bradford and Brussels disasters. After years of macho posturing everyone went a bit silly for a while. Instead of punches, it was inflatables being waved around. Steve Naïve…: “Before I was old enough to know better, when City were away I sometimes went to see Forest. I vividly remember the following exchange with a shaven-headed 'hooligan' before one game: (Him, menacing) "That had better be a Forest dinosaur you're carrying" (Me, scared) "It is, yes" (Him) "Good thing too!"

The most fun you can have for two quid!
