IPSWICH Town boss Paul Jewell admitted the 5-1 defeat, at the hands of the club’s fiercest rivals, was “embarrassing.”

Norwich coasted to their biggest ever win in an East Anglian derby, eclipsing their 4-1 victory over Town at Carrow Road from last November.

Jewell knew his side’s shortcomings, before last night’s humiliation, but it was still a bitter bill to swallow.

“It’s hugely disappointing, obviously,” confessed Jewell.

“It’s a local derby and a full house, and we wanted to try and put on a decent show for the fans.

“Unfortunately, it’s an embarrassing scoreline really, there is no doubt about that.

“I think we probably had more possession than them, and maybe had more attempts on goal, but they were more clinical in the two boxes.

“Their two strikers (Simeon Jackson and Grant Holt) are both good players, and they did give us a hard time.

“Norwich were exceptional in both boxes tonight, whereas we were average to say the least. Their strikers are incisive and they are always a threat.

“We haven’t got that at the moment. We need someone who is going to get us a goal, but having said that we don’t create that much either,” added Jewell.

The Town boss was quick to compare his side’s poor home record with their success on the road.

“I think we have got the fourth- best away record in the league, and yet the 18th worst home record,” continued Jewell.

“For some reason at home we just get done on the counter-attack. Teams get behind the ball and hit us on the break and we can’t deal with it.

“I know where we need to improve”

The one highlight for Town was Jimmy Bullard’s wonderful long-range strike, which for a moment at least gave the home fans something to cheer.

“We got back to 3-1 with a whirlwind from Jimmy (Bullard), and we’re thinking it could be a rousing last 10 minutes,” explained Jewell.

“But within two minutes, and from our corner yet again, the game is over with their fourth goal.”
