Gutless Hibs further embarrass themselves

Hibs succumbed to an early Scottish Cup exit following yet another truly embarrassing performance.

The gutless wonders currently adorning the once famous shirt can rest in peace tonight following their completely hapless display against a team of part timers from the Scottish Second Division.

Take no credit away from the sterling performance of Ayr United and their merry men of butchers, accountants and builders but tomorrow morning should see all Hibernian players, board members and staff have a very long look at themselves in the mirror.

Hibees lost the encounter at Somerset Park after Mark Roberts was allowed to twist and turn unchallenged in the box and fire past goalkeeper Graeme Smith, whose handling on the night was the prebverbial juggling of a wet bar of soap.

Ayr had scored inside 15 minutes. The SPL side could be expected to show some character and immediately show some fight to restore parity but this current Hibs side lacks any sort of spirit and once again surrendered meekly to opponents whom should be, if not cannon fodder then certainly relatively easy prey.

Whilst this may sound dismissive of the Honest Men a team of very well paid professional footballers should not be posting a return of 8 victories spanning some 42 games and nearly a full calendar year.

Indeed even some of these victories fail to show the appalling fall from grace of the club.

Laboured victories over Montrose, relegated Falkirk and a Dundee United reserve team are included in those figures and it's very difficult to see where once proud club is heading.

Chairman Rod Petrie and his board must shoulder an enormous amount of the blame after a succession of managerial appointments have failed to inspire anything like the required level of performance over the past few years.

It appears the managerial merry go round has hindered the club although one must ask where exactly the problem lies at Easter Road.

The entire first team squad are, as eloquently dubbed by one Hibee, "A shower of gutless, spineless, chancers offering nothing but taking the lot."

It's very difficult to disagree with this sentiment having encountered 90 minutes of football hell provided by players who've performed at the top level with the Old Firm and even Manchester United.

One thing for sure is the great disharmony amongst the support who are as far attached from the club now as they have been for thirty years.

On current form Hibs are unlikely to sell many more than a few thousand season tickets for next season.

Perhaps then the hierarchy will take the disgruntlement on board and perhaps try to earn the £500,000 salaries they suck from the balance sheet every twelve months.
