Hibs lack of success in the Scottish Cup is well documented having gone 109 years without lifting the famous trophy and this afternoon's performance against Second Division outfit Ayr United gave an insight into why the drought has lasted so long.

Quite frankly, Hibs lacked absolutely everything.

The Hibees couldn't even blame resting players as they fielded a full strength side and included, for the first time this season, Moroccan magician Merouanne Zemmama however there was to be no magic from anyone in green during the 90 minutes.

An insipid display saw such a lack of fight and commitment gaffer Colin Calderwood may well be considering why on earth he took on the poisoned chalice that comes with the Hibernian managerial role.

If truth be told the plucky visitors could have won the game in stoppage time had Hibs keeper Mark Brown not pulled off a fine save from United's Andy Rodger.

Calderwood's record as Hibs boss is hardly inspiring confidence amongst the faithful with only 2 wins out of 12 games since he took charge and the wholesale changes hoped for by the supporters in playing staff has yet to show any sign of beginning.

Sadly, many Hibees fans have witnessed so many of these poor performances over the past 10 months they no longer care, or choose to spend their money elsewhere on a Saturday afternoon as witnessed by the poor attendance at Easter Road for this cup tie.

For the record Hibs best chances once more fell to Derek Riordan, whom without Hibs would offer very very little in way of a goal threat.

The striker had one effort hit the bar in the second half whilst forcing the Ayr keeper into a save from a free kick.

Riordan though would probably admit he could have done better from Danny Galbraith's ball.

All in all another completely frustrating afternoon at Easter Road and the players, not for the first (or probably last) time this season left the park to a crescendo of boos.

Hibs : Brown, Thicot, Hanlon, Grounds, Zemmama, Miller, Murray, Galbraith, Duffy Riordan.

Subs : Trackys, Wotherspoon, Stevenson, McBride, Smith
