He is keen for both to sign, along with Aaron Morris, who is understood to be close to agreeing terms, but will have to be ruthless as he looks to shape his squad for the new season.

Edinburgh said: “I would be disappointed to lose them but we aren’t going to be held to ransom. Hopefully, they are edging closer.

“There will be a cut-off point. The two boys (Nelson and Wright) are senior players, I have trust in them. I understand they want what is best for them and we are trying to get the best value for the club.

“I am hopeful that we will get an answer by the end of the week for both, but I am not going to stretch it forever. We want to make a decision. It’s soon going to be a case of that day or no day.

“We have to make sure we are not vulnerable ourselves and miss other targets.”

It's not unreasonable to set a time limit is it?

At the end of the day, they either want to stay or not.

If not, the club needs to look for replacements and quickly.

Whilst JE would like a decision you can't blame them for waiting to see if they can get a better offer. As senior pros and at their age they will need to do the best they can for themselves.

Of course Brexit. You couldn't blame them for that.

But equally, the employer has plans and decisions to make.

I'd say we want a yes or no by a certain date and if we don't hear, we assume a no and move on.

Let's be honest, neither are world beaters or match winners.
Both are adequate for league one.
That's about it.

Club has offered them a deal, players have not responded.

Whilst the player has to what is right for them we are only interested in what is good for our club probably more so than the players- give them a date to respond by then pull the deal

As an employer like me durhamgills, would you ever make a job offer to someone and then say take your time and let me know when you're ready.

I'd reckon not and I certainly wouldn't.

I'd want a decision by a date and that date would be pretty soon.

As I said, they either want the job at the pay offered or not.

Players go on holiday for a few weeks. Nothing much ever happens in first few weeks of June.

Only players out of contract not released last year was G Morris, and he resigned on the 15th of June.

New signings

Jackson 25th May
Garmston 14th June
Williamson 14th June
Donnelly 25th June
Ehmer 2nd July

Both eminently replaceable.

Nelson definitely not as reliable this season as he was at his peak for us. Good leader type though. Even if he stays would like to see us plan for his successor (whether that's a young un or not).

I know people love Wright but I see him as a competent League One CDM and not a massive amount more. Was poor last few games of the season which is concerning.

Would be surprised to see Wright go for Walsall, Chambers plays in that role for them and is great from what I've seen of him.

Just to be absolutely clear; I was supporting the right of the club to set a time limit and that it was sensible to do so. Both sides are free to negotiate and to decide when to stop doing so and concentrate elsewhere. We should only ever hang out for a very special player. These are our senior players and if we mishandle negotiatioons with them it sends out bad messages.

The club have not mishandled negotiations the players have been offered a contract - if anything it the players who are send bad messages - you would have thought getting a job is more important than holidays

Make the offer, set a date and if no news move on. Look around see whose available. If someone is sign them.

Both sides know the score and play the same game every season.

No loyalty at this stage of the season by clubs or players. Both do whats best for them.

Reportedly Danny was on £5k per week.

Past it McDonald must be on £3/4k per week.

Keepers normally earn less than outfielders.

Wright was without a club and joined us on trial so probably got a contract below normal.

If they don't sign no problem. I would put Hadler in as first choice with an experienced back up. Then find a solid L1 CMD player on a one year contract with options.

It's unlikely that anyone is on anything close to 5k a week!

That's ridiculous! 2.5k is probably our highest individual wage. I reckon Cody is on something like that, Loft probably was too. I obviously don't know for definite, nobody outside the club knows this, but I'm certain that my suggestion is a lot closer to the truth than previous ones on this thread.

£5-6k is what Rod Wallace and Tommy Johnson earned per week. No chance Danny Kedwell would've come from non-league at his age and earn anything over £3k.

I'm guessing it's more about the length of the deals. I'm guessing we're offering Nelson and Wright one-year deals, so for security at their age they're using the time up to their deadline to hunt down a 2-year deal. If no decent offers, then they'll stay with us.

69.5k is the average, with teams such as Coventry and Sheffield United paying considerably more than most could afford, that leaves a lot of teams paying lower than 69.5k. Allowing that figure may have increased to 79.5k, that is still only £6.625k per month

A quick look at the accounts for the year to May 31, 2015 shows average salaries and wages overall at about £42k. Take out the lower earners and you'll get something like other L1 clubs - 55k - 65k perhaps

Albo, I've been there but these are footballers that have a chance to move unlike some of your employees perhaps. These guys don't work until they're 65/70 - not as footballers - so if there's a chance of a longer contract elsewhere and with families to think about can you blame them. To me they're good players, some of GFC's better ones, but they're not indispensable.

I don't blame anyone for getting the best deal that they possibly could.

If I could have left school at sixteen, worked for ten years doing something I loved, AND made enough money to last me a lifetime, I would have jumped at it.

The reality for lower league players is that when their football playing days are over, they will have to do something else to earn a living, just like the rest of us.
They are not unique in that.

My point really was, we're not talking Maradonna & Messi here.
Two perfectly adequate league one players, offered new deals.
Take it or leave it in my opinion.

Remember last season Nelson was put on the list. Well there clearly weren't any takers and Josh didn't even have a club at the start of the season. HE asked to train with us while looking for a job.

If they can do better elsewhere, fine by me.

£2.9 million total staff wage bill in 2014/15. Make it £2.7 million minus coaching setup?

£2.7 million divided by at a guess: 22 players on average = £2.4k a week.

That said, would total staff wage bill also include admin staff?

I'm willing to bet that the average is quite a bit lower due to a few youngsters, yet that won't be offset by any proper big earners.

2.5k pw on a 3 year deal signed in 2008. That was signing someone offered a contract by his existing championship club.

It's really not a problem. It is always a domino effect.

We will have made an offer we think is fair to the players. We will also be talking potential replacements at the same time. Some will be an upgrade, others cover in case the player we want to sign or keep does not pan out.

Clubs higher up or with more resources will also be making offers, and making signing which will set the domino's in motion.

They all get paid for a few more weeks yet, so no one is in a rush to sign when they could still get a better offer.

Yes it would be nice to have the whole new squad sorted by the first game in preseason, but the whole chain could be being held up by championship player x's Mrs not being happy with the shopping options in Rotherham.

Good quality league 1 players will be looking around for a chamopinship squad spots, as that will mean being paid 2 or 3 times a starting lg1 rate,

You will also get players under contract spending the whole summer not thinking about a move, only to turn up at preseason training to find 3 players in front of them for a starting role.

So you get a whole bunch of players looking for moves once preseason has started.

Now I am not an accountant, so excuse me if the following is wrong, but this is how I see it:

In the 2014 accounts (Year Ending May 2014) the accounts show the Wages and Salaries were £2,981,453. Then there's also social security costs of £311k. I'm assuming this means NI and/or Taxes? I would include any NI within a figure for wages, as most players will no doubt release their 'before tax' figure, as most of us do when we consider our 'salary'...so it's a total of about £3,300,000 for wages in this period.

I am pretty sure this doesn't include Scally's fee or any other directors remuneration, and as such I would expect the playing costs to take up much of this. Minus maybe a commercial manager, 1 or two full time ticket office staff/shop staff, and match day staff (bearing in mind Compass must have paid for the catering staff too). As such, from a point of view that I don't know at all how football clubs are run, i'd be very surprised if it was more than 400k-500k for non-playing staff? Even then I think that's fairly generous.

So you're looking at between £2.6-£2.7m for players wages.

In the same period we had 24 players.

Doing a very basic average, if everybody was earning the same, then that's 2.1k a week.

Of course though many younger players will be on hundreds of quid a week, and back up players like Morris will be on only 1k....i can well see that the key members of the first team squad would be on double the 'mean average'.

So actually 4.3k doesn't seem unreasonable for a key member of the first team squad at all.

Of course it's a matter of opinion as to whether Kedwell should have been considered a key member of the first team. A lot of people saw him as a penalty scoring (slightly) richer man's gary mulligan, and many would have been happy for us to replace him, but that's by the bye.

If Scally and Taylor deemed him to be a key first teamer, then 4.3k is not out of the realms of possibilities at all. In fact I think i'd expect that to be the approximate wage of our 5/6 top players.

AB the 311k would be employers NI, chargeable to the club. The £2.981m would be gross salaries (ie gross of PAYE and employees NI. Any salary of directors would be included.

If say Scally charged the club for say consultancy that wouldn't be included in wages and salaries.

I thought it was Hess who was given a decent budget straight after the restructuring IIRC, but spent relatively big on non-league strikers including transfer fees.

If we get say £2 million for Dack it'll probably be in yearly instalments. Would this go to our wage budget if we usually stick to

May get a small rise in the playing staff budget but the way the club is structured and the because payments will be staggered it is likely to go into the normal day to day running of the club - the important KPI is the balance the books

As said before, Nelson Wright and Morris have been made offers. As long as we have not replaced them, and they have not signed for another club it stands to reason the offer will still be there. As far as I am concerned the only player of those three I would not want to lose is Morris, a utility player like him will be very difficult to replace. Nelson and Wright are OK at this level, but limited. Wright is inconsistent as a defensive midfielder, and Nelson whilst an excellent shot stopper is weak in other areas of his job ie. dealing with crosses and his distribution. Keeping all three would be alright, but I think Morris is the most important of the three.
