Former Portsmouth and England Under 21international Mark Hateley recalled just what a life-chager winning the UEFA Under-21 tournament can be.

Hateley is a veteran of ther last England side to win the tournament in 1984 and within weeks he had been capped by the full squad, scored in the Maracana against Brazil and been transferred to AC Milan!  Article continues below

'Winning the Under 21 title was a great step up for me personally,' said Hateley.

'I'd been playing in the Second Division for Portsmouth and then it just went ballistic, like a comic-book story.

'Scoring in the final, ending up the player of the tournament, making my England debut and scoring against Brazil in the Maracana. Seventeen days later, I signed for AC Milan. It seemed to be like reward after reward.

'That's what is there for you if you're fortunate enough to be in with a good group of lads like I was. We'd won the Under 18 tournament in 1980 and a lot of players from that team went on to the full squad.

'It can be just the same for Stuart Pearce's side.'
