England have already booked themselves a semi-final spot with a game to spare in the European Under-21 Championships, thanks to second half goals from Fraizer Campbell and James Milner in a 2-0 victory over Spain.

Manager Stuart Pearce had called it his “biggest test”, but will now get to graduate onto the next level, after the small matter of meeting Germany on Monday. Article continues below

The much sought after Manchester United striker, Campbell started the game on the bench, alongside Theo Walcott, but Pearce made great use of his substitutions by bringing the young star on to open the scoring, only for Walcott to double the lead with a superb run on the left, before slotting the ball back to Milner.

The Aston Villa forward had a penalty saved in the first half, but made no mistake when presented with a second opportunity to score.

Psycho now has a lot on his mind to deal with in terms of selection problems, with five players all fighting to start. He will want his side to finish top of the group and go into the semi-final with confidence, but at least now he’ll be able to try things out in Halmstad.

England U21: Hart, Cranie, Richards, Onuoha, Gibbs, Cattermole, Muamba, Noble, Milner (Gardner 84), Johnson (Walcott 62), Agbonlahor (Campbell 39).
Subs not used: Lewis, Taylor, Tomkins, Stearman, Rodwell, Driver, Rose, Loach.

Goals: Campbell 67, Milner 73.
