So another of our highly rated players leave, what did you expect? Or more to the point why did you expect?

As Coventry fans we know the departure of our best players is just around the corner, it always has been and although it pisses us off at the time we dust ourselves down and get on with it and wait for the next one to come and go. The anger from some Coventry fans is evident yet so is the acceptance from other quarters so why the divide?

For me we have the one set who saw past the spin and hyperbole of the Ray Ranson/ Chris Coleman/ SISU dream and another set who bought the tee shirt wearing their heart on their sleeve. We all know that promises made by football clubs are not set in stone and are to be taken with a pinch of salt, so that’s why we scour the internet and message boards and the back page of our local rag or tune in to the Bob Brolly show for something anything.

The fact of the matter is, the fans were led to believe that Coventry City would do all in it’s power to keep “The big four” and on the face of it, this has not happened. Maybe honesty and integrity has all but vanished in football, maybe the “it’s a business” analogy has completely taken over. Whatever the reasoning, Ranson and Co need to understand that, even in business, managing your customers expectations is half the battle.

Personally I do not buy in to the business train of thought. Yes a club needs to become self sufficient to survive, unless you support a club that’s being bankrolled by some billionaire for fun or ego. Those that do tow the business line seem to want to hunt with the hounds and run with the hare when it suits them. While they sell the family silver (or copper) because it’s a business they want you to carry on supporting and parting with your hard earned because it’s “your club,” in “your community.”

As a customer, would you still be shopping at Coventry?

As a customer being enticed into Coventry with the recent promises made only to find they were false promises you’d be straight on the blower to trading standards.

Mr Ranson, us Coventry fans are a hardy lot and a little bit of honesty will go a long way, we might even surprise you.
