The game of their lives.

Released in 2005 and originally called "The Miracle Match" The game of their lives is a story about the American National side who famously beat the professional and much superior English side 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. With typical American cheese this fun and uplifting film shows that when ordinary people from different backgrounds join together as one anything can be achieved. The team was put together from amateur footballers from all over America literally weeks before the Finals before travelling down to Brazil to take on the World.
This was a time or normalising for the world of sport with the end of the war when there was no real pecking order.
Eventually the true favourites Brazil (and not England as the film suggests), reached the final against Uruguay who had won it 20 years previous. To avoid Tie's, games were played in a "round robin" fashion and because of their suprerior goal difference all Brazil needed was a draw from the game to ensure they became world champions. The game took place in front of 209,00 fans (still a world record attendance never-ever to be toppled.) Brazil took the lead late in the first half only for Uraguay to level the score early in the second half. Brazil only needed to hang on for the rest of the game to become champions. With 11 minutes left Uraguay scored again and played out the rest of the game to lift the World Cup once more. Brazil would have to wait 8 more years before its first when a 16 year old named Edson Arantes Do Nascimento joined the team. The world knows him best as Pele.
It's been said that history would have been re written if fate had not dealt a cruel blow to Italy a year earlier. The Italian national side was made up almost entirely of Torino Calcio players who had dominated Serie A for the past 7 years but in 1949 most of the team were killed in a plane crash.
For the record The US team lost their first match 3-1 to Spain before beating England 1-0 and losing 5-2 to Chile eliminating them from the tournament.
