If there’s one thing you can be sure of when a Coventry City manager gets the chop it’s Stephen Hughes coming out with insincere gash in the local rag about him being 100% behind the new man and promising to give it his all. It usually coincides with his contract being up for renewal. And sadly, it usually does the trick and he gets his new contract.

Hughes is a clown prince amongst the dross that currently plagues the Ricoh. The lack of a decent central midfield pairing is well documented. Doyle is a headless chicken with the passing ability of a disabled chipmunk. But he isn’t in the team as the playmaker. He needs to be moved on in the summer like a lot of others so why single out Hughes? It is because, quite simply, he is crap, and has been relentlessly crap since the move to the Ricoh. A good game for Hughes is passing the ball to a team mate four times and making two tackles. That may be enough for some deluded City fans but it certainly isn’t for me. This guy gets paid £thousands and just ambles around not breaking a sweat. His positional sense is poor and he rarely tracks the opposition midfield. I defy any of you to actually watch him for the whole 90 minutes and come up with a valid justification for him wearing the famous Sky Blue kit. He offers nothing and is a major cause of our consistent under-performing when he features in the first team, which is sadly all too often. When Dennis Wise was here, we were all stunned to see a 70 year old midget transform the team let alone the midfield. Even Doyle looked good alongside the menace. Sadly we couldn’t keep hold of him but those of us with a brain hoped that Adams might just have noticed how well the midfield performed without Hughes. We were mistaken of course. Fat Boy got a contract and it was business as usual. When Dowie came in we once again thought that the end was nigh. Alas not. Dowie may not have played him all the time but certainly far too often.

Now it’s Coleman’s turn. For me it is the first major test of his managerial judgement. A fair chunk of the current squad is fit only for the scrapheap. Hughes should be the first to go under the crusher. If no one at the club tells Coleman this then it is up to the fans to vent their spleen. We all know Hughes will “up” his game for Coleman’s settling in period. Maybe he might just manage six passes to his own players and make three tackles instead of two. Perhaps he will break out into a trot during a match? Heaven forbid, he might actually get his kit dirty. Some fans seem to think it is being “unsupportive” to criticise a player like this. To them I say: Get back to your padded cell! If you enjoy being ripped-off and taken for an idiot week in week out by players like Hughes then quite clearly you are seriously mentally deficient.

Your time is up Stephen Hughes and I am watching you very closely Chris Coleman.
