Colchester United were brought down to earth on Tuesday as their hoodoo against Leyton Orient continued.

The U's made four changes to the side that beat Norwich 7-1 on the opening day, as Mark Cousins, Alan Maybury,  Kem Izzet and David Perkins replaced Ben Williams,Marc Tierney, Dean Hammond and David Fox.

The home side got off to a nightmare start after just 90 seconds as JJ Melligan outpaced Lee Beevers and Romanian striker Adrian Patulea ran in at the back post to finish it off.

Cousins was then forced into action just minutes later as Jimmy Smith's low shot was well saved.

A mix of solid defending and poor finishing allowed the visitors to lead at the break.

Half Time: Colchester 0-1 Leyton Orient

18 minutes into the second half and the victory was sealed for the O's as Melligan got on the scoresheet with a low strike from the right hand side of the area.

Their night got worse as with just seconds left on the clock, striker Clive Platt aimed a headbutt at Ben Chorley and was issued a straight red card by referee Darren Deadman.

Simon Hackney pulled one back with a free-kick from the edge of the box, but it proved just to be scant consolation as Orient beat Colchester in a cup competition for the second season in a row.
