It was a case of the magnificent seven as Colchester United shocked Norwich with a magnificent display in the first League One fixture of the season.

All of manager Paul Lambert's new arrivals travelled to Norfolk to take on one of the favourites for the League One title, with Ben Williams starting in goal, Magnus Okuonghae and Lee Beevers in defence, Ashley Vincent and David Fox in midfield with on-loan Ipswich striker Kevin Lisbie renewing his partnership with Clive Platt.

After a opening ten minutes where the home side were on the front foot, with Wes Hoolahan causing danger with dangerous crosses.

Colchester somewhat took the lead against the run of play after ten minutes, as Lisbie silenced the boos of the home fans. After Simon Hackney put pressure on right back Jon Ostemobor, the ex Crewe man played a bouncing pass back to keeper Michael Theoklitos, and the Australian failed to deal with it and the striker walked the ball home into the empty net.

Just three minutes later, the advantage was doubled. After good interplay between Platt and Lisbie, Lisbie burst away from home captain Gary Doherty who failed to deal with his pace and after his shot could only be parried by Theoklitos, Platt tapped the ball home.

On 19 minutes, two quickly turned to three after a cross by Hackney wasn't cleared, and the ex MK Dons striker finished at the back post.

It was four after 22 minutes, as ex Blackpool man David Fox curled home a delightful free-kick.

Two home supporters then vented their anger at Manager Bryan Gunn, with them throwing their season tickets at him.

Seven minutes before the break, it was five. After a long throw by Marc Tierney, Platt flicked on at the near post, with Lisbie ghosting in unmarked to head home.

Half Time: Norwich 0-5 Colchester

In a more relaxed second period, it took until the 70th minute for another goal to be added.

Young striker Cody McDonald seized on some hesistant defending by Pat Baldwin to fire through Williams' legs and pull one back for the Canaries.

Just six minutes later, it got worse for the home side as substitute David Perkins sidefooted a volley home.

With just seconds left of the game, Kem Izzet squared for Scott Vernon to finish off the rout.
