In the pouring rain Cardiff City got off to a winning start thanks to a late headed goal from Roger Johnson. The goal came at the end of a much improved second half performance after a poor opening period which ended all square.

Cardiff took the lead with five minutes to go with a well struck shot from Steve Thompson, although this was quickly cancelled out with a well worked Saints goal at the Grange End.
