Bolton Wanderers star centre-back Gary Cahill was the target of Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp this summer, the former Portsmouth boss has revealed.

Megson recently stated he would 'never sell him', but admitted it 'wasn't just about football'.

And when the former Aston Villa defender signed a new contract this summer he removed an 8 million pound bouyout clause in his contract- somethng Redknapp was looking to profit from.

Redknapp told the media: "He [Cahill] is a terrific centre half, a potential England centre half and he had a buy out clause.

"But he has signed a new contract so that's an end to that - whatever he was worth then, he will cost a lot more now," Redknapp admitted.

He continued to praise the player, saying: "What I like about him is that he wants it- he can head it, he's strong, he has a great attitude and he wants to win."
