Prospects for 2017

"I can see us fighting relegation", wrote one of our esteemed posters in another thread. This led me to have a bit of a ponder about our ambitions for 2017...and this is what I came up with.

Its clear that we are not the dominant side of 2014-5. England calls are biting harder, everyone has those few extra miles on the clock and the circuit has had a bit of a chance to work out our fill in players. In addition, through the decrease to 8 sides in the top division and the money spent by some counties, competition has gotten that bit tighter. Having said that, if everyone were available for a full season, I reckon we would still walk the Championship - Lyth, Lees, Root, Handscomb, Bairstow, Ballance, Bresnan, Rashid and Plunkett would make an awesome top 9 and we have still got firepower with the ball that others can only dream of.

But...the batting is badly affected by international calls; the two best players in the country are unavailable to us, and their replacements - you would assume Leaning and Hodd - are just not of the same stellar quality, and anything behind them is more or less untested guesswork.

The seam attack is less of an issue - Plunkett and Willey will likely make the Champions Trophy squad, so miss four games, but they are not exactly first choices for us. Those that are - Sidebottom, Brooks, Patterson, Bresnan - are undoubtedly getting on a bit but crucially, none has shown signs of age affecting their bowling. We are still in the sweet spot where we get the craft of experience rather than the plodding medium pace of broken bodies - and those occasions when we seemed to struggle last season can be more attributed to the lack of scoreboard pressure from our batsmen. Back up is decent too - Fisher will be welcome back, Shaw showed enough at Gloucestershire to suggest he has a future with us, Warner is well thought of and sharp, Coad decent and Waite looks a potential all rounder of the future.

The spin, less so. When Rashid is with England we lose not just his batting and ability to clear the tail. Rafiq lacks penetration with the red ball.

So, we are probabaly two players short of where we would like to be - a top order bat and a spinner. The former should be easy to fill by an English passported Aussie (hint - Renshaw, Lehmann....).

Indeed Tykemania, you sum up the prospects for season well. We must hope Leaning and Rafiq play well. Seems like the signing of Handscomb is the only one we will make.

It's the off season so goes quiet, owt to get a bite.

I chucked out the relegation bait and you bit Tykemania[^]

Recall when we won the 2001 CC then following season with an ageing bowling attack under super coach 'one season wonder' Wayne Clark it was a total nightmare and Clarky was so exasperated,he had no answers, just shuffled back off to the Australian sun with his tail between his legs.

Big pressure on Gale, untried coach and ageing squad on top of MCB just wanting to stop us.

I see Hampshire have signed two Kolpaks to help lift them away from the foot of the table. Meanwhile Lancs have to re-think their coaching team whilst Ashley Giles tries to fulfil the potential at Warwicks. Wonder what the pitches at Taunton will be like? Did you see their spinner Leach has come under scrutiny for his bowling action?

Bookmakers have got more faith than me,saying 2017 CC another straight shoot out between YCCC and boroughs.

South London the next best.

The Boroughs will undoubtedly be assisted by Saffer Strauss again.
Yes, My Lord, I noted that chucker leach had been rumbled by the authorities. I also noted that Ashwin had a distinctly bent arm, that straightened out, during the recent test series.
I wonder if the decision to offer visitors the option to bowl first hasn't backfired, in that the cider swillers are now preparing two day pitches for their chuckers. Surely the whole idea was to try to force counties not to produce pitches that favoured their attack, but offered a fair chance to honest endeavour and skill. Its no co-incidence in my view that of the thee top counties only Yorkshire produced that type of pitch, whereas the MCC/Boroughs produced pitches on which only contrived results were possible and the Wurzels offered club standard bunsens to suit chucker leach and his cronies.

I think the signing of Hanscombe shows we are well on the way to regaining our rightful trophy, despite Strauss' efforts to stop our blokes playing for us, while allowing the Boroughs' England players to play for them. Cheating scumbag.

Superb to watch from a dizzler coached side.

Well felt like t'first day of spring today, started to think about cricket.

Start to think positive about YCCC then next thought is yeah good, but then how many are Ingerlund gonna rob from us.

We won't see Jonny B at all in 2017.

Think 2017 might be another year of excuses, without of course ever blaming the England set up from robbing us of another county championship.

How many times have YCCC fans said when coming into a decisive championship battle 'so happy he's (YCCC player) not been picked for England'

Well, the Norf Landin Boroughs have already started, haven't they, with The Ginger Leprachaun announcing that Bairstow and Root can "rest" when Yorkshire have matches. Who the hell does this odious little foreign **** who refuses to sing the National Anthem when captaining the ECB XI think he is?
I've been trying to keep up with the changes to the date of the IPL auction ( Are the BBC covering it, as half their programmes are about auctions? The other half being about cooking), and the date now seems to be tomorrow, Monday, the 20th. We should discover then if Bairstow has been signed to play in in, in accordance with Strauss' instruction to further devalue the County Championship.
Planning must be a nightmare for Moxon and Gale, but we still have a strong group of players, so I remain ever hopeful.

I read an interview with Nay Joe Lad on the occasion of his ascension to never playing for Yorkshire again (said Mr Strauss) in which he gave the aforesaid Yarpie slugmuncher a coronary by suggesting that he wanted to play the first three games of the Championship for us...

Very sensible, too of NJL. He needs some first class practice before the Tests start.
