Yorks vs Warwick .. 4 Day game

An odd day ... how we got to lunch with only one wicket down is a mystery ... there were some close calls & fewdropped catches ... Mags was nearly run out after dropping his bat as the ball was bowled .. there were also a few drops & balls that didn't go to hand ... Carter was most upset when one appeal for a catch off Lyth was turned down. There were a number of balls keeping low from the Football Stand end .. poor Ambraose hada torrid time behind the stumps. Lyth duely got his 1,000 runs for the season.

Than after lunch things changed .Lyth got bogged down & the excellent Carter got Mags & Lyth. Bairstow & Brophy slowly put things back together, after tea the rate increased ... then Bairstow played all around a straight one & was given out LBW .. basically because he looked absolutely plumb to give Piolet his first championship wicket. Rashid's first run was a similar shot .. thankfully Adil conected. The pair then batted well until the close ... the variable bounce appeared to have stopped.

Agreed; the amount of movement in all four directions in the first 90 minutes was reminiscent of some of the nightmare Headingley strips of the late 80s and early 90s, and I can envisage circumstances where we - any batting side - might have been six or seven down.

It did plenty afterward too, I thought - Lyth batted well and Brophy was excellent. He still wouldn't get in my first choice side, but he did the job here.

Thanks for the reports - just off to work now. I hope Brophy gets a hundren and Adil bats well. What would be a good score? We are still around 3 an over with 6 wickets in hand - that sounds like a familiar tale this season!!

PS When can we have Gale back - does anyone know?

Good reports. I'd never have guessed that from the scorecard. With Warks batting a bit on the frail side perhaps we can get a win here, especially if there's some spin, although the Warks spinners didn't do anything. Botha came on as seventh bowler!

I think Warwickshire's batting is very reliant on Trott and Bell and neither are playing. Although Troughton is still a very good player, batted very well at Edgbaston in the first innings before getting caught by a brilliant catch when Yorkshire played there. also got some runs in the second.

Well, we're in with a chance, again.

Once more we've got to dismiss an opposition tail on a painfully slow pitch, then hopefully enforce the follow-on and do it all again, on the same painfully slow pitch.

Failing that, it's set a target - perhaps 350 in a whole day, given Warwickshire's shite batting - and try to get 10 wickets on day 4.

I've read the comments - Lyth's about the pitch being tricky early doors, and TM claiming it was like Headingley of old - but I'm not convinced. To me it looks slow and low, but with just a hint of uneven bounce. There was a period on day 1 when Maddy bowled just short of a length and dead straight, and even Lyth and Mags, and then Bairstow, were unable to score at all.

There really is no excuse for a pitch like this after the summer we've had.

Nevertheless, Adil was superb today. So far he has outbowled Tahir, a reversal from Edgbaston, and I'd like to express enjoyment of Brophy's innings, too.

Also to acknowlege the efforts of Carter and Westwood for the visitors, and even Rikki (ridiculous name) Clarke has performed pretty well.

I'm very hopeful of making them follow on. If we do, then we've an excellant chance of a win. If not, then I sense we'll take a while to get far enough ahead and then its less likely we can bowl them out in the time left. Kenny's analysis of the Warks recent batting adds to my hope. I'm also hopeful of Essex doing us a favour and beating Notts, who so far only have 3 bonus points.

Yes! Warks all out 253 and we have a lead of 172. 3 wickets for Patterson this morning, earning him 4-57, with Rashid 4-71. Couple of dropped catches by Bairstow and Rashid [c&b chance] this morning. Waiting to learn if follow on enforced. Raining at present.

Very promising position now, because we have three Warks men out for 93 and essex have Notts 42-4, needing another 261.

Yes, it was promising, but Warwicks have batted very well in their 2nd innings and now we need 7 more wickets by mid-afternoon Thursday to give us a chance.

I thought we bowled really well today, with Rashid superb and Best putting in easily his best spell of the season - unrewarded, unless hitting Troughton on the head is reward, which the compassionate Best took no pleasure in.

Patto, OHD, Mags and Azeem all bowled steadily in support of the two strike bowlers, and Ollie was unlucky (I thought) not to get an lbw.

Conversely, clearly Westwood thought Adil lucky to get the verdict from Lloyds at the other end.

All credit to the umpires for playing on in conditions in which play would have been inconceivable in the past.

And all credit to Warwickhire, especially Clarke and young Javid, for making life so tough for Yorkshire.

I'd say tomorrow morning is one of t'most important sessions of the season.

Get an early wicket or two and this Warkwickshire side could revert to type and fall away very quickly. Giving us a win, 23 points and an outside shot at the title with one (or perhaps both) of Bresnan and Shahzad to return to us later in the summer.

Let 'em of the hook and it'll be mid-table safety. Solid improvement for a young side but, you know, not what we'd like...

One thing I've disliked about the Warwick team is that virtually every one has objected to being given out LBW .. Westwood is a good case ... he padded up outside off stump without playing a shot ... dangerous in these days .. yet didn't think he was out ... as FD said one from O H-D at the Kirkstall Lane End in the 2nd innings looked rather adjacent

I totally agree with your comments about Warwickshire's non-acceptance of decisions, dp. In the field they have appealed without restraint, long and loud and more than once if necessary, for absolutely everything. As a batting side they've dragged themselves away from the crease as though every 'out' decision has been a personal affront.

And if the umpires have become pissed off and given a couple of 50/50s against them, it serves them right.

But I still can't believe Ollie didn't get the decision against Clarke.

seems indicative of the Warwickshire way - I have rarely seen a team with a greater and more apparent sense of entitlement about them, as indicated as well by their compulsive need to "talk to" every player who might be out of contract anytime in the near future.

Westwood was plumb, by the way, just beaten all ends up by Rashid's googly.

I saw the Westwood decision on Sky Sports News last night and it seemed the ball pitched a couple of feet outside off and turned "square", but if it had been one of our players who'd got that decision I'd have been furious, because I can't see how the umpire (Lloyds cound have given it with certainty, especially after his performance at Rafiq's end in the T20 at the weekend, where he failed to give 3 plumb lbw's, two of which a blind man would have given.
As for the Warwickshire attitude, isn't this merely what is to be expected from a team run by Pilo, one of the great cheats of recent years?

You can have another look at that dismissal (all be it from behind) on the ECB site. It's about 1:50 into the highlights package.

Edit: The Tino bumper is about 2:20 in.

Thanks for the video link, KS.

The Westwood alleged lbw confirmed my view at the time - big spinner from round the wicket, no way could it hit in line and not miss leg. Atrocious decision. (Not a googly, TM)

So I've no problem with Westwood being disappointed, and even showing disappointment for a second or two, but bad decisions happen and this was blatant dissent.

I've given it a miss today and I'm currently listening to Cally rubbishing Tino. And given that he didn't get on until 4th change yesterday, perhaps that's the official line.

91 needed from 13 overs, 8 wickets in hand.

If Rudolph declares the Yorkshire innings now, it'll be almost as stupid as the declaration he made at Taunton. Almost.

Well, he didn't, thankfully, and the good guys have won the game and WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

6 games left, next up Essex at Chelmsford on July 20. Already booked my B&B, though I'm coming back after 2 days to watch the historic Pak v Aus Test at Headingley.

I'm not so sure that was a good decision, now.

I wonder if Warks improved batting in this match can help them turn over Notts in the next round of games?

FD: I might see you at Chelmsford. My move got pushed back to the end of this month. Well, day 4 of the Essex game to be exact. I'm hoping to get everything sorted so I can attend the first 3 days of the game. This may only be a dream obv, something is bound to crop up!

Tino was not at his best on our southern tour (Somerset and Hampshire) nor in the two Roses games, but I thought he put in one wonderful spell here, in this game. In the course of it he beat Westwood 4 or 5 times in an over, had them hopping all over the place, and hit Troughton with a perfect bouncer. And he was accurate as well as very fast.

Gale handles him well but Rudolph hasn't a clue. I accept he's not the best bowler in the world, but used well he can add variety to a very samey medium-pace attack.

Realistically, if we had Bresnan and Shahzad, plus the impressive Patterson, Tino probably wouldn't get a game. Without those two, we need him. He's certainly better than Gillespie or Harvey ever were for Yorkshire - though that's damning with faint praise, I realise.

Sorry .. but I didn't think Best was as bad as some say ... yes he's all over the place at times .. but I'd be worried if we'd had Sanderson or Lee in his place. and sorry .. but Pyrah taking the new ball is taking the Michael

Good that we won .. well done to Bairstow who showed maturity in getting us home ... I was expecting Bluey 2 to hole out going for a 3rd 6

I don't think you can measure the worth of a fast bowler, in English conditions, purely by his figures. It isn't what he does badly its what he does well.
Fast bowlers, like Best, shakes people up and mess with minds. Others bowl tidily and don't. He is the best (Ha!) overseas bowler we've had a) because he tries hard and fits in and b) because he's actually lasted more than half a game. Of course, as has been stated, that ain't saying too much.

Bairstow looks better as a batsman than a keeper/batsman. Rashid is finding his confidence again - if only Wainwright could we'd be in. Aj looks like staying fit through a season by using the ECB substitute fielder programme. Heh ho.

I heard CMJ on the radio last night trying to get a rise out of MPV '' you look like winning this title '' I think he said ( although with a mouth full of marbles you never can tell) MPV refused to take the fly -wise - Really with four teams under us all capable of passing our points total - if they win their games in hand - this is work in progress. So far, so not in the relegation zone. Is that negativity? Cant help it - been too long since 2000.

All this talk of championship is worrying me ... our bowling is just getting by .. for most of yesterday we thought we'd have another OT where the inability to break a lower order partnership would stop us winning.

Without Shahzad & Bresnan our pace attack looks pretty threadbear... the spinners are making the big breakthroughs .. as a result Rashid was overbowled .. & got far too lose later on. Its just a shame that we cant get Best's radar working .. but I suppose that's why he's bowling for us rather than the West Indies.

Someone should ask Troughton what it is like to face Tino. Some of the best quickies at county level have sprayed it a bit and the bloke at the other end gets the benefit.

Close used to go shopping with his 'leggies' from time to time in the third innings and then rely on a good batting line up to get the runs.

As long as the ECB keep hold of our better two bowlers then the best we have is what we have - no pun intended!

What a good win - I listened to the radio commentary for the last hour on line - probably coct me a fortune but worth every penny. Shades of Bluey seniot there - 'finishing' a game.

For the first time this season I actually think we've an outside shot at the title.

We'll need 2 out of Gale/Bresnan/Shahzad back for the rest of the summer and for other sides to keep tripping up, but it's a possiblity.

Tino's not taken the wickets he should and his line is irratic, but without him the attack's too samey. He seems to me to be very frustrated with his bowling at the moment. It's a strange thing to say about a West Indian, but I think he needs to relax more.

I think he was more frustrated with Rudolph who gave Pyrah the new ball, if you can believe that.

The point is well made, that fast bowlers get wickets for the man at the other end. And Tino is fast, very fast, as Troughton will testify - I agree with that comment also.

So get off Tino's case and let's continue to get behind him. He's an emotional guy who responds to crowd encouragement, and he's pure box-office, like Kirby x 3.

Perhaps, like Kirby, he'll be the x-factor that takes us to the title. We beat Essex, then Notts, then Durham, and history beckons - Hampshire at Scarborough!

No harm in dreaming, is there?

Ah come on, Tino is worth a place in the side for the energy and impetus he brings to the side. Its no surprise to me that Petterson has picked up so many more wickets when there has been genuine threat at the other end for a start. My only concern would be that Yorkshire seem to be picking Maniac as a batsman so as to ensure they have six bowlers, which seems unduly negative.

As for the title...hmmm...bit early to say for certain but, if we get Galey back, I can see us having as good of a shot at it as anybody. The weather plays into our hands because we have three decent spinners (one of who, Adil, is a potential wicket machine) whereas the other contenders have fat darts players (Notts) children (Lancs) and the Taunton pitch (Somerset) to battle against. Durham are probably as big of a threat as any if Harmison starts to fire...

So, its possible. I do rather think though that we will pay too great of a price for failing to kill sides off earlier in the season.

And yes, it was a leggie. Fooled by the angle! Still looked plumb to me in the replay though.
