West Ham United will certainly look for improvements in 2017/18 as they look to progress after an eleventh place finish last time around. However, they couldn't have dreamt of a harder opener when the fixture list for the 2017/18 Premier League season was announced earlier today.

The Claret and Blue Army will start on the road again as they face a tough looking trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United when domestic action gets underway during the weekend of 12 August before the visit of Southampton to Stratford a week later.

Following the Saints' arrival, the Hammers then face back-to-back games against newly promoted sides, as they travel to Sky Bet Championship title holders Newcastle United before facing play-off winners Huddersfield Town in front of their own fans at the start of September.

The fifth game of last season saw the East Londoners suffer a 4-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. Well, the fixture computer has thrown that one up again at a similar stage. One thing is for sure though, the travelling support definitely won't want to see a repeat of either the performance or result.

Then, it will be time for manager Slaven Bilic to see if he can stretch his unbeaten home run against Tottenham Hotspur to three games in the first London derby of the season seven days later.

Brighton and Hove Albion are the second of the newly-promoted clubs to visit East London on 21 October. The seagulls will be hoping they won't suffer the same fate as they did on their last visit to Upton Park in 2012, when West Ham romped to a 6-0 victory.

November gets underway with a second "big club" visiting the capital, as the home side will look to get their revenge on Liverpool for the 4-0 humiliation suffered in the final Stratford encounter of the previous campaign.

The end of that month also sees the first round of midweek fixtures with the East Londoners facing a tough trip to Everton.

West Ham's record against the top eight sides last season left a bit to be desired. If they are to improve on that this term, then they have three big chances in December with a home derby under the lights against Arsenal to follow the visit of Chelsea.

Before all that though, they start the month with a trip to The Etihad Stadium and face the challenge of Manchester City.

Thankfully this year, West Ham fans don't have too far to travel for the Boxing Day fixture, as Bilic's men are on the South coast with the trip to The Vitality Stadium and AFC Bournemouth before what could be an exciting end to the year with an away day at Wembley where the manager will hope to get his first away win against Spurs.

2018 will begin in the same way that 2015 did for the Irons, as they welcome the Baggies to Stratford hoping to start the New Year in style before the reverse of the AFC Bournemouth fixture comes around just over two weeks later.

The East Londoners have enjoyed both of their recent trips to Anfield. Will they be able to do the same again? The answer will be revealed on 24 February.

José Mourinho brings his Manchester United side to the East End for a repeat of the opening weekend's fixture on 17 March, as the hosts will look to get their revenge for the start to 2017.

The standout fixtures in April see a trip to the Emirates Stadium to tackle Arsenal, while a visit from Manchester City also looks an intriguing contest.

The campaign comes to a close with a visit to The King Power Stadium two take on Leicester City, before it all finally ends with a first final day home game for the Hammers since 2013 with Everton the visitors.

With no European campaign to focus on, West Ham can look forward to a much more relaxed start to the season this time around. Come On You Irons!!!
