Last season, West Ham United were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup at the quarter-final stage. This season however, they didn't even make it past the third round, as they were comprehensively beaten 5-0 by Manchester City on Friday night.

Slaven Bilic made three changes to the side that lost to the red half of Manchester on Monday, as Adrian replaced Darren Randolph in goal, while Edimilson Fernandes came into midfield in the absence of Cheikou Kouyate, who was away at the African Nations Cup and Andy Carroll started in place of Dimitri Payet, who dropped to the bench.

The Hammers started well, but once the Citizens got into their stride they began to dictate proceedings. John Stones sent his header wide before Adrian had to stop David Silva's effort with his legs.

The visitors were still applying the pressure but the home side's defence was standing firm. Evidence of this was shown when captain for the night Winston Reid excellently challenged Raheem Sterling to prevent him from getting a shot away on 26 minutes.

The danger was still not clear, as seconds later Adrian had to make a superb save, tipping Sergio Aguero's well-struck volley over.

After trying so hard to make the breakthrough, Michael Oliver awarded a penalty on 31 minutes after Angelo Ogbonna tripped visiting skipper Pablo Zabaleta in the area. Yaya Toure confidently stepped-up and slotted the ball past Adrian to give Josep Guardiola's men the lead.

The Irons had a golden chance to bring themselves back into the tie but Michail Antonio did well to find space in the box but his effort was well saved by Willy Caballero in the visitors goal and luckily the rebound dropped for Sofiane Feghouli but unfortunately, the Algerian sent his effort horribly wide.

Guardiola's team didn't panic and increased their advantage and it was an unfortunate moment for Havard Nordtveit, as he got the final touch to Bacary Sagna's cross to take the ball beyond Sterling and turn it into his own net.

As if things weren't bad enough for the hosts, City made it three just two minutes later when Silva added his name to the scoresheet. Sterling sent the ball over for the Spaniard to beat Adrian to make the tie safe.

At half-time, Bilic must have had some harsh words to say to his team and was certainly hoping for a better performance in the second period.

For the visitors though, it became a case of just how many they would finish up with by the end of the match.

They really rubbed salt into the wound on 49 minutes when a great team move was finally finished off by Aguero.

Regular skipper Mark Noble regained the captaincy from Reid on 57 minutes, as he came on to replace Manuel Lanzini, while Bilic also introduced Dimitri Payet in place of Carroll.

By this point, West Ham were struggling to deal with their opponents, as the Citizens looked to try and score with every attack, but they were unable to find a finishing touch before the Hammers made their final change, as Ashley Fletcher took the place of Antonio on 77 minutes.

The visitors did score again but it took them until the 84th minute to do so.

Substitute Nolito who had earlier replaced Silva, delivered a corner which was met by Stones and he finished the job off, as his header found the back of the net.

All of which means the visitors have a fourth round tie to look forward to, while for the East Londoners, their focus is now purely on the league next Saturday when they look to do the double over Sam Allardyce's Crystal Palace.
