Ricky's Friday Fact - this week: holes

Report Message | Email Message To A Friend | Reply To Message

Did you know, the deepest hole ever drilled is on the Kola Peninsula in northern Russia (near Finland). It is 7.5 miles deep, but only 9 inches wide, and the temperature at the bottom is over 250 degrees Celsius. They started drilling in 1970, and it reached the deepest point in 1989. It is considerably deeper than Everest is tall.

I don't want to overreact but this is quite possibly my favourite Friday fact to date.

How deep until they reach magma?

It is still a toss up who is the biggest hole in history, FagendPete or Carlin/Ash/Perry.

Ricky's surprised about that Pedalo, thought it was quite dull this week, but just goes to show you're a tough crowd to predict.

Anyway, to answer your question, they were about half way to the magma, but they stopped drilling years ago, the site is now abandoned.
