New York Red Bulls 0 – 4 Colorado Rapids
Independence Day in the Colorado capital city was scheduled to show fireworks after the match. Rapids fans and supporters also were blessed to see fireworks during the match in the form of Tom McManus, Mehdi Bellouchy, Colin Clarke and Omar Cummings; the four Rapids to find the score sheet in a 4-0 drubbing of the New York Red Bulls. The annual MLS July 4th FEST in Denver saw Colorado have a dominant record, having only lost once and drawn once in 12 years. The Rapids continued their domination in front of a sold-out crowd at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Tom McManus started the goal-fest as Colin Clarke dribbled down the left flank and then crossed the ball over defenders to a wide-open McManus. The Scottish striker calmly fired home his fourth league goal of the season in the 24 minute that sent the home fans in wild celebration. Soon after, Englishman Terry Cooke sent in a low cross to the near post that Moroccan Mehdi Bellouchy tucked in for a 2-0 halftime advantage. In the second half, Colin Clarke showed some breathtaking skill as he burned a Red Bull defender and fired a laser to the far post that made the score 3-0. Jamaican striker Omar Cummings netted his fourth league goal of the season as McManus, who could have shot on goal himself, unselfishly passed to Cummings, who only had to beat one defender to be clear on goal.
Colorado ended a four match unbeaten streak, including 3 losses and a draw with their best offensive showing since defeating LA Galaxy at home 4-0 in the season opener back in March. The Rapids improved to 6-8-1 for 19 points, and are 4th place in the Western Conference. New York Red Bulls fell to 5-5-5 and are in 6th place in the Eastern Conference.
